Gun camo reminds me of CoD, though the skins weren't too bad in BF as they did match some environments. Could've sworn i saw a blueish G36 in that BF4 MP debut, which is stupid. As for the soldiers camo i think it needs to be set on particular maps. Woodland for woods, snow for snow, tan/desert, etc. People would unlock the black camo and then wear it in the desert and snow levels and it just made them standout like sore thumb. I'm sure they used it because it's the last camo you unlock but still. Wouldn't you rather blend with your environment?

Honestly, if someone want's to make themselves an easy target by picking urban camo in a desert environment, then let them. It was a little clunky to change stuff like that in BF3 so I understand why it happened, but from what I've seen, the UI improvements make it much faster and easier to change stuff like that.
All in all, I very much approve of being able to personalize your character as well as the changes they've done to make that easier.
