Looking for USB Mic Recording Software

Thread Starter
I have the CAD U37 USB microphone, and I'm looking for some simple audio recording software, does not need to be fancy, however, I just need the ability for it to record well.

I've been using Audacity, and although it works, I have to set the microphone recording volume manually, and when I'm recording, if there is a sound that is loud, distortion is recorded. And if all of a sudden the input sound is not loud enough, the recording becomes quiet. So I need something that has a wider range of good recording quality... does not distort louder sounds and quiets down quiet ones as much. I am not a microphone or audio recording expert lol.

My goal pretty much is to record guitar playing and singing, or simple conversations.

Other software isn't going to help that- the recording range of the hardware is the range of the hardware. Dealing with large dynamic ranges isn't easy.

What you want is compression. But you shouldn't do that in real time if you are just recording- do it after recording.

Record at the lower sound level then use Audacity's Compression features to fix the volume afterwards.

To try and do it in real time is generally a mistake, because the software will have to make the adjustments retroactively. When a quick sound comes it, there will be a burst of loudness and then you'll hear it quiet down. Do it afterwards, and the software will "know" when its about to get louder and adjust at the right moment.
