Can you use a graphics card that is PCI express 3.0 in a PCI express 2.0 slot on a MB with Intel CPU

Thread Starter
I purchased a EVGA Z68/P67 MB for my next PC build a few months back and got a really good deal on it. However now I have noticed that alot of the GPUs are all PCI Express 3.0 connections now and not the 2.0 that the MB supports. Will I be able to keep this board and just use one of the new GPUs that are 3.0 in the 2.0 slots? Is it worth while then to keep this board, or just buy a new board with the 3.0 slots. Is there really a big difference, and will I lose alot of performance out of the cards that are 3.0? I will be using Intel for the CPU. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Silent33

Yes you can smile.gif. You will lose a little performance, but so long as your CPU isn't bottlenecking the card you should be fine.

You sure about loosing performance? My gtx780 is still hitting 100% usage in stressful situations on my PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot. Maybe if you don't have x16 it may bottleneck there.

Some people give misguidance ... A 680 for example is bottlenecked at best 2% @ PCI-E 2.0 4x
