What PSU?

Thread Starter
Hey, my old Antec PSU died the other day, it was a few years old, I'm a bit lost as to which PSU to get now. It's probably the only thing I don't know much about in a computer. I'm currently running a generic 500w PSU i pulled from a case I got for £30, so am in need of upgrade soon as.

I'm looking for a PSU that I can use to overclock my Opteron 165 to about 2.5ghz air cooled. I currently run a BFG 7600GS GT and am hoping to get another soon.
  • 500watts + (would go for a 480w though)
  • less than £60 ($120)
  • Overclock my Opteron 165 to 2.5+GHz
  • DFI SLI-DR with 4GB DDR500 (overclocked)
  • Run 2 BFG 7600GS GT cards in SLI (eventually)
  • Run 4-6 SATA HDD, and will probably end up running SCSI on it.
  • Quiet
  • Don't care what make, as long as PSU is stable

I have my eye on the following...

HiperPower 530Watt ATX2 24Pin Ultra Quiet PSU

Thermaltake W0103RB 600W ToughPower Black PSU

OCZ ModStream 520w ATX2.2 Power Supply

Any and all help welcome. And Merry Christmas

Will easily power that rig and is very nearly silent

I did a power calculator and it said I need 714w. I thought that a bit high, but I take it on board. Would certainly open up many more PSU's to me, esp. in my price bracket.

Look at these PSUs:
Xion PSUs
500W - $90
600W - $100
Modular 600W SLi - $110

All of them have a nice, quiet 140mm fan with blue LED lights and the modular SLi one looks amazing for the price, in my opinion.

How about an Ultra 550W? They're very reasonably price, reliable and have modular cables. I haven't experienced any instability with mine, it's just great.
