Haswell Not Your Average Mom-N-Law Build

post #1 of 15
Thread Starter
Okay so Mom-N-Law came to visit and brought her old desktop which for it's time was a very decent desktop. After looking at it and going over upgrades this build as started. Now the parts are ordered and have to be picked up on a short trip this week. This build get a thumb.gif from me and also a drool.gif because this is one I wouldn't mind having.

So the case she ordered is: NZXT Guardian Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Case I have the red edition of this.

Amazon=69.99

Okay lets get the psu out the way. Don't want to skimp here. Learned from experience. : Thermaltake SMART Series 750 Watt ATX Modular Power

Microcenter=99.99

Okay so to start off the storage dilemma: SanDisk Ultra Plus SDSSDHP-128G-G2 128GB SATA 6.0G For the OS of this beast.

Microcenter=94.99

She has to have space for the pictures: Toshiba 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal HDD

Microcenter=59.99

Okay The FPS Pumper for her gaming habits: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost 2048MB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 x16 Video Card

Microcenter=179.99

Okay the Motherboard where all the magic comes together: Sabertooth Z87 Socket LGA 1150 ATX

Microcenter=219.99

Now for the Brain of all the fun: Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz Socket LGA 1150

Microcenter=279.99

The ram needed for this build: Ballistix Elite 8GB DDR3-1866 (PC3-14900)

Microcenter=69.99

Okay I know I still have a build log on AMD but this is my Mom-N-Laws build and need ideas of good aftermarket air cooler for this pc. I want to put a slight overclock and not have to worry about it once it goes out of state. Won't mind visiting the N-Laws not that I ever did though.

Sub... Looks like a nice build what are you going to use for cooling???

I don't know I want to go air cooling I will have this thing for a month before it goes back to the Mom-N-Laws state. I am trying to figure out which high end cooler will fit into the case. Any suggestions are welcome. I will only do AIO water cooling if I go that route.

Was looking at water cooling aio for my build lots of people say h100i is the way to go. I recommend going to Martin liquid laps he has tested aio. I am still working on what to get for my build...
post #5 of 15
Given the desire to OC the thing (even slightly given the more temp sensitive nature of oc'ing haswells) and the desire to move it out of state... an AIO liquid cooler might be a better choice than high end air. Comparable cooling capacity, but maybe more shipping & handling friendly.

Oh... and mom could kill zombies more effectively with a 660ti smile.gif Not sure the price diff, but could trade up the gpu for less expensive mobo/ram which would hold a slight oc, the psu would certainly not mind.

I was thinking something along that line but would probably be too cramp of a fit to get the full functionality of the h100i. I was thinking maybe the kuhler h20 920 or maybe something along this route.

I like the way you think. I think the 660ti is about a 140.00 jump but I will see if I can talk with microcenter and change some things up. Or maybe they should sponsor the difference seeing at the order I just put in with them.

You'd need 120x120 rad with that case, so a dbl wide like the Kuhler 920 is probably your best bet if you go with an AIO. Martin does great reviews of these things. The Kuhler is an Asetek OEM but there are quite a few of them including models from Zalman, Thermaltake, Coolermaster, Corsair (and who knows who else). If martin has reviewed these 120 models, he might have some good suggestions about which kit to choose. I've been running an Asetek 550 (skinny 120x120) for coming up on 3 years now, no problems whatsoever, and my pc was shipped to me with that cooler installed.

Hi KnownDragon

A light overclock should be fine on air, and you don't have to worry about pump noise or leaks.
I went for the Gryphon board which in the uk was £60 cheaper than the sabertooth, offering everything except included shield thing, and a couple of ports. that would enable the better gpu.

as for air coolers, check out any reviews/roundups of current coolers that fit socket 1155 as its the same cooler layout for our new 1150.

I went for the Thermalright true spirit 140 but thats a biggie, a lot of light overclocking can be done on 120mm coolers which should fit that case, CM Hyper 212+, True Spirit 120, or even the double fan Phanteks should do you justice smile.gif

I am doing my build today and will be posting a build log on here, along with a buddy who is building a Gigabyte system.

good luck with your choices, and be jealous of your Mother - in - law smile.gif

First off I'd like to start by saying that these are suggestions only and are just some things to consider. Before getting to my proposed changes, you did not mention the exact purpose of this rig but you did mention her "gaming habits". The following recommendations are under the assumption that it is a gaming rig, so keep that in mind specifically for my CPU/GPU recommendations.

You can save $50 [Microcenter] by dropping from a Z87 Sabertooth to a Z87 Pro. You'll lose eSATA and 2 USB 2.0 ports, but gain a PS2 port and built in Wi-Fi. You also lose the dust/protective cover but hundreds of other motherboards seem to work fine without it.

You can save $120 [Microcenter] by going from a 4770k to a 4570. You lose Hyper-Threading and the unlocked multiplier, I don't know what the max multiplier is for the 4570 but I'm sure somebody here knows. This really depends on if you're going to overclock a lot. The loss of HT is a small cost for the additional $120 available for say, a graphics card. However if you'd still like to overclock, you can save $80 by going with a 4670k.

For an extra $25 [Microcenter] (after $20 bundle savings) you can get a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB instead of the Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB. Now I don't personally have either of these, but the only thing I know is that the Samsung is highly, highly recommended on OCN as well as other sites. I've rarely seen Sandisk recommended, although I could be mistaken.

For an extra $130-140 [Microcenter] you can afford an HD7950 instead of the 650ti. You should see a noticeable performance increase from this change.

Taking into account all of my recommendations, you end up saving a negligible $5-15. However, the gaming performance should be noticeably and quantifiably improved.

I have no recommendation for a cooler, as that is up to you and what you decide to do pertaining to overclocking. However, the memory you have chosen uses a large heatsink that may interfere with many substantial air coolers. Microcenter also carries a Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x4GB 1600MHz kit for $52.99 after bundle. You save a few dollars, lose a tiny bit of per-stick bandwidth, but gain Dual-Channel operation, which will more than likely offset the bandwidth loss. This is just something you should keep in mind when making the final decision on your cooler and memory.

Good luck with the build.
