Split focusing screen, should I buy one?

Thread Starter
I recently bought a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 series E and I have trouble focusing. The focus confirmation dot certainly helps but I can't get tack sharp focus. Also I have a few concerns : 1) Is the split focusing screen make the viewfinder darker than the stock focusing screen? 2) How can I focus on off center subjects? 3) Is buying a split focusing going to help with manual focusing speed?

Thanks for your help thumb.gif

Which Nikon do you have? Some have a manual focus indicator on the view finder.

A split focusing screen makes manual focusing very quick, and easy. A good (read expensive) screen should not darken the viewfinder, and if anything should make it brighter. A cheap one will most likely darken it. To focus on an off center subject you just move your camera a bit until the split is on the subject, focus, then re compose.

I have and Nikon D40 which has a 95% viewfinder accuracy which makes it's darker than a 100% viewfinder. Also, I'm probably going to buy a cheapo 20 dollar split focusing screen because I don't have enough money right now for an expensive one. Thanks for the reply guys, appreciate it !

fyi the 95% isnt the size of the viewfinder, its the percentage of the actual frame you see. if you take a picture with something perfectly lined up to the edge of your frame, on a 95% there will be a little space between the object and the edge of the picture.

split screens in general will darken your viewfinder making it even harder to see.

Thanks for the info smile.gif I wasn't aware of that.

I wanted to buy the focusing screen but unfortunately my D40 died on me today with the "Press shutter release again" error. The camera took around 80'000 exposures (way over the 50'000 shutter actuation life). I had this camera since 2008. Will be upgrading to a D3100.

Anyways thanks guys! Maybe i'll buy a focusing screen once I get my D3100

you should see if you can budget a d7000, because it offers a significantly larger VF when compared to the d3xxx/d5xxxx series.

I would love to get a D7000 but now I really don't have the money right now. Will be buying a dirt cheap D3100 with around 1K shutter actuations from a relative for around 150 USD with a 18-55 kit and a 70-300 AFG lens... Maybe someday i'll get a high end dx camera.
