680 Sli Disappointing

Thread Starter
I recently got another 680, and it is not as big of a boost as I expected. Don't get me wrong, it has added a very noticeable speed increase. However, I expected to be able to run games like BF3 maxed at 1080p never dropping below 60fps. It stays at 60fps a lot more than before, but occasionally, in certain spots, will drop in the high 40s on large 64 player maps. Is this normal? Can any set up run bf3 maxed @1080p and never drop below 60fps? A lot of people say 680 sli is overkill for this game @ 1080p. This is why I am asking.

Btw, both are overclocked to: 1189/3402

something isn't right then, did you reinstall your drivers after installing the second card?

I'm using the 690 and my frames in BF3 never go that low and usually are over 100. I'm using a 120hz monitor and have no problem with fps.

my settings for reference:

1080p at 120hz
all ultra
2x msaa

AFAIK, BF3 Multiplayer is a CPU bound when you fight with 64 players especially at a big map.

CPU limitation is my guess. Tdm is not as stressful on the CPU. Try playing tdm 24 player. You'll have never below 100 fps.

That's because you're using a 2nd 680 on a PCIE 2.0 X4 slot, so besides being bandwith limited, you're running HyperSLI which can cause software issues.

If you want to see decent FPS you need to buy a proper board that supports SLI thumb.gif

Really? I thought my Cpu was fine. What cpu wouldn't bottleneck? I have noticed CQ 48 never drops below 55fps.

my i7 at 4,5 GHz was not able to push the 7950/7970 at 99% but my minimum never went below 75 fps. average was about 130fps same settings as yours. what driver are you using? i read 306 is the best for bf3.

I was afraid that was the issue. I didn't want to get another ivy bridge, but I guess I have to. What board would you recommend? Something that can run both Sli and Cf.
