sas sata mix on m1015 IT Mode

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
On an unraid build utilizing a M1015 card flashed to IT mode, what's to stop me from using one of the new cheap 7200 1tb sas drives for my cache drive? Or will that just cause confusion and mayem across the controller/motherboard

@OP

There should not be an issue. As far as I am aware, the M1015 is a SAS card, and SAS uses SATA Tunneling Protocol (STP) to provide compatibility with SATA. SATA belongs to the ATA command set, SAS is an evolution of SCSI.

I can't remember... but can you use SAS and SATA on the same SAS port? I thought their were limitations on this.
Once again...

@DuckieHo

You mean mix SAS and SATA on a single SFF-8087? That much I'm not sure about. I have a Dell SAS 6/iR, but I'm only using SATA drives with it, as opposed to a mix.

Do they even make cables that would allow that?

Not sure about the M1015 specifically, but you can run SATA drives and SAS drives together. I've seen it done on a PERC 6, but that was with a SAS backplane rather than cables.

Now that you mention it, kinda makes sense. There are a ton of enclosures out there that support both SAS and SATA.
