Huge FPS drops playing League of Legends

Specs for the pc in question is "Wifey"

Starts off at a smooth constant 60 fps which seems to be the max as I've never seen it go any higher, then after about 10 minutes of gameplay it spikes to like 14 and slowly climbs to around 30 and stays there for about 5 minutes and then goes back to normal 60 again for about 30 seconds and then spikes back down again.

What is the cause of this?

Do you use V-sync or a software limitation ?
What are your game settings ?

Does it only happen in this game? Do other games display any type of FPS lag?

First things first, make sure all your hardware is up to date with drivers from the manufacturers website. Radeon drivers from AMD. I would also make sure Windows is up to date. Make sure there isnt some application running in the background also, sucking resources sporadically.

After that, I would get a benchmarking program like 3Dmark 11 (you might get 3Dmark 06 as 11 on that system might throw you off with really low FPS). Also get GPU-Z and let it run while you run the bench mark. The sensor tab in GPU-Z will show you the temps and fan speeds over a given period. You can change the values to percentages and maximums. After running the bench, you can look at the max temp and max % fan speed. As per a few interweb searches, the normal load temp for that card is around 70c. Your's may be slightly higher. If you run a really heavy stress test like Furmark, you might get closer to 90 which I would say is on the edge of the comfort zone for that card. I wouldnt let it get hotter than that.

Check your readings. Make sure youre not getting too hot and that your fan is spinning up properly. It will probably only spin up to 40-50% at 70c.

I will have to try this when I get home this afternoon.

The problem is only recent, so I doubt its the game settings itself. I'll d/l the stuff and check the temps tonight during play
