y580 ssd

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I'm looking to replace my 16gb ssd my y580 came with http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0085J17KA/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_details_o00_s00_i00I'm going to install my OS on it as well as games and other programs. I been reading a lot on this and I'm still a little confused. Once I install the ssd and the OS, is express cache necessary? From what I understand I need to install Intel rapid storage for optimal preformance. If I'm correct on that my questions are do I need express cache and rapid start?

I don't have a lot of time to explain my self more and I'm on my phone. So when I do I'll update the thread

Thanks!

Check Tech Inferno before you buy one. Lenovo has a lot of hardware whitelisted to not work on their mobo without a modded bios.

The only thing that is whitelisted is that of the wireless card...
they do not allow you to put your own stronger card in without modding the bios to do so....
Tech Inferno SVL7 has a guide and download links for the modified bios..

With hard drives and ssd's lenovo has not whitelisted anything for this computer other than the wifi as mentioned before..

So yes you can throw that in there and it will run very smooth just look at the sig for me use crucial m4 also and it works for everything i need...

Understanding Intel RSTIntelRST

For express cache it only helps with mechanical drives, the reason being is because they released models with small ssd..those were used for cache specifically nothing else it came with preinstalled setups for boot time and so forth...
BUT because you are using a larger ssd for your OS and other things, you do not need it at all...Though you can reroute on your secondary drive the large mechanical drive to put cache folders on there that you know become very large (browsing applications, editing)

These are things that i have done

There are options to for the y580
Repalce ODD with HDD (ebay for caddy)= More Hard Drive space OR, move the current HDD to keep it cooler from being right next to the GPU/CPU cooling

16GB memory= Maximize the memory for more in VM and also editing (ramdisks and photoshop is your friend)

SSD= OS/Always used programs/Updates
HDD= Temp Folders/Minimally used programs/Storage for movies/music/Etc.
HDD2=Storage for LR4/Photoshop/LRT- All images, render files, everything for editing goes there

External USB ODD Enclosure= If i have dvds i want to burn or rip i just use it, most of the time though it stays in a box away
