Graphics port on motherboard and haswell, use GPU or MB ports for Dedicated GPU?

Morning Everyone,

I remember a long time ago reading something about Z77 boards and that there was some graphics feature where even with a dedicated GPU you would plug into the motherboard output (DVI). What would happen was that the intel HD graphics would be used for 2D and video decoding (using quicksync) and the dedicated GPU would only be used for intensive stuff like 3d gaming to save power.

I know Lucid does this, but I can never remember if it was integrated into Z87 or not.....

Anyone know if you should plug into the onboard GPU ports or use those on your dedicated graphics card for power savings / performance etc etc....

Thanks,
Slash

I'd connect to the dedicated one. There's a feature in the drivers for the GPU to utilize onboard to connect additional displays, but the data wouldn't go through the faster GPU you have installed.

Sorry... by dedicated you mean on the nvidia card.. not the motherboard's dedicated port for graphics?

Just asking for clarity, appreciate your time.

I believe many Z87 boards come without Virtu license. So unless you plan paying for it, use NVIDIA ports.
