Also, I don't know of any IVB chips that won't run memory higher than 1600, but I suppose it's remotely possible you just got a terrible IMC?

This, Corsair tends to bin the mid range memory kits pretty tightly. When the vengeance line first came out reviews showed the worst overclocking potential a lot of people had ever seen. I'd blame the kit more than the cpu or board.

It just depends on which Vengeance kit you get and even more so on the ICs used. I had some cheap 2x4GB 1866C9 sticks that used Hynix CFR and they could get up to 2666 with 1.75V.

Did you ever post an answer to this question? I looked thru the replies and didn't see it, but it is possible that I missed it. This info is on the actual module LABEL and is located to the right of the timings and voltage information. It will look something like "ver3.12" (like in the quoted text above), or "ver8.14", etc.

Corsair uses the "verX.XX" to identify the brand of ICs used to produce the module and that will go a long ways in determining whether or not the modules have any potential headroom or not.

Look here to identify the IC brand based on the various codes:

Poor overclockers? Man you don't say that, I've just my 4x 8GB Vengeance Low Profile sticks (CML16GX3M2A1600C10) and they are running right now at 2133 MHz at 10-11-11-31-2T, 1.55v and their original timings were 1600 MHz 10-10-10-27-2T at 1.50v, you can't say that's bad overclocker, considering it's not even top performance model.
