This, its hard to expect the next generation of Intel CPU's to be compatible with the previous socket. If I was a Intel buyer, I would have the "I'm going to need to purchase a new motherboard" state of mind all the time as its almost expected. With the few quirks that 1150 has now, I can guarantee there will be a new socket for next gen Intel chips once again. Tho the Haswell refresh chips will most definitely still work in them.

It really isn't a problem when you consider that most people who have an Ivy won't be upgrading to Haswell. And perhaps not even the Haswell shrink.

Exactly.

The don't invest in a dead socket argument is pretty much null and void this round with the exception of some chipset/board features.
The refresh isn't supposed to be anything that great either, but I guess we'll see.

Any one heard if the Haswell "K" CPUs will have VT-d enabled?

I'd love to go slap some Intel management...2500...you get VT-d...2500K...NO VT-d FOR YOU! It is just so backwards...well really I think it should just be enabled on all of them, but it don't make sense to block it on the "Unlocked" CPUs and allow it on the 2500. It isn't like either one of these CPUs are a Xeon...neither will be in a multi-CPU server since that isn't even supported on the LGA 1155 socket. So why not allow me to use hardware passthrough and overclock at the same time?

According to Intel's ARK, the i7-4770K does not have VT-d (aka "Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O"), while its standard-clocked counterpart (i7-4770) does have it.

The same difference in VT-d functionality applies between the i5-4670K and i5-4670.

Well in this case yes, since it was big news when they first said it was going to be in there...now they've removed it or else never actually put it in.

Bah, I should have just looked up CPUs on ARK...just never really thought about Haswell and VT-d till just now.

that just so dumb. I can't understand why they do it. I pay more for a "K" CPU because it has more features, but one the features I want is disabled.
