Hi, I plan on being a game developer and I currently use the free version of Unity and Blender. However, I have a crappy laptop that is well... crappy, so i have decided to upgrade from an AMD-A6 3400M with 6 GB of memory and an integrated GPU to something a bit more satisfying like these:

I don't know who voted for #4, but #5 will be a much more responsive computer.  With a 5400 RPM HDD (very slow), the SSD in #5 will greatly improve the laptop's responsiveness.  #5 also has twice as much RAM as #4 — you should have plenty even for a RAM drive, if you so choose. thumb.gif

Thank you for the input. Now, i have heard of a RAM drive but i don't know what it is exactly. If i had to guess, it would be something like using the memory as a cache space to further speed up disk or SSD performance. Am i in the ball park somewhere there?

Yes.  Basically, a RAM drive is when you run a program that will turn a section of your memory (say 8 GB) into a drive.  RAM drives have very fast access times and speeds.  On one had, with an SSD, the performance benefit from using a RAM drive would be less because the SSD is already quite fast; but on the other hand, if you set the RAM drive as your temporary folder (at least for your web browser), it would reduce wear and tear on your SSD.

Some people scoff at this, but if disabling your swap file (very highly recommended for best performance if you have plenty of RAM) causes problems with some programs, you could also put your swap file on a RAM drive if you've got piles of memory (24 GB is a pile of memory wink.gif).  A RAM drive should always be faster than a SSD (1.5–4×), and it will always be much faster than a HDD.

Perhaps some other people here can elaborate on the virtues of a RAM drive if you're interested.  I would say, though, that the SSD is the main reason to go with #5, because you shouldn't notice the difference between 12 GB vs. 24 GB of RAM under most circumstances!
