I have an idea

Thread Starter
It may be a crappy idea but it is an idea.

I have a gps unit that I bought to mess around with, I put on a program on it that made it like a mini laptop with programs and games and such ( mainly to view videos on it ) but I used it for a day or two and was over it. so its just sitting collecting dust and doing nothing so i had an idea.

Is there a way to use it as a monitor? I was thinking of having it as a display monitor to show cpu usage, ram usage stuff like that. I thought it would be kind of cool but have no idea if it is possible to do it, but I dont see why not since it is a monitor technically. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Does it have any video inputs? Whats keeping you from trying to see if it works?

I think you would have to find a way to get the monitor working separately from the rest of the components. I am guessing it has a proprietary video connector similar to a laptop?

If you are willing to strip the screen out and delve into some pretty hardcore electronics it can be done.... Problem is building the interface between the PC and screen.

Check this thread out http://www.overclock.net/t/1248141/custom-fan-controller-build-working-on-5-display-warning-pic-heavy/0_20

Basically what you want to do right?

That is pretty much exactly what I want it to show some graphics and stuff like that, I dont mind stripping it out i only paid 10bucks for the gps at my old work I found it hiding and was on clx for so long cause it was hidden it went down a lot lol. Now the problem is figuringout how to do all of that lol.

IMO, the right way to do what you want would be to write an app for the GPS that interfaces with the PC via USB and then displays performance info on the screen... but I'm a programmer and would find that easier than actually using the GPS screen as an extended monitor.

well what you say would be perfect to write a program that does that via usb. but im not lucky enough to be a programmer so I cant do that unfortunately sadsmiley.gif
