Simple, free and effective way to cool several portable hard drives!

As usual, I'm not sure what category this would fall under but feel free to move it if necessary.

This is mostly a mod for someone who uses a lot of USB drives or portable HDD's. All you need is a little thermal paste and an old heatsink (the larger the better). I was having issues with some of my HDD's getting a little warm (45-50c under load) and I never like it when HDD's run hot.

So anyways, I tried spacing the HDD's apart and it helped very little. Even with a 100mm fan blowing at them (HDD's are horizontal, 2.5 inch drives) it didn't help much. I figured I would try to use an old 478 socket heatsink (all aluminum one) to act as a sink for the bottom HDD, and allow airflow to the bottom of the top HDD.

I had a tube of AS5 just sitting there, so I said what the heck. I applied a long grain of rice to the heatsink and stuck in to the bottom HDD and sat the top HDD on the heatsink. Long story short, I'm sitting at low-mid 30's under load now!

I dropped about 20c just adding the heatsink. It's not for everyone, but it works and it didn't cost a dime. thumb.gif

That is pretty interesting. I have never had a problem with a hot HDD
