AM3 CPU Upgrade for HTPC

Hi all, I have an HTPC with an AMD Athlon II X2 260 Regor CPU in it. It has a dedicated graphics card (Radeon HD 7000 series). I'm having issues with Netflix Streaming being jerky in HD quality mode. What happens is that the video slows down for a few seconds, causing it to get out of synch with the sound, then it rapidly speeds up in fast forward mode for a second to catch up. Didn't used to be an issue but you know how sliverlight changes things with every upgrade.......

Anyway, I read online that the codec silverlight uses doesn't offload processing to a graphics card and is CPU-bound instead. When I am streaming HD content over netflix, my CPU goes between 70 and 100% utilized on both cores. There aren't any other processes sucking up CPU Utilization... it's all coming from IE/Silverlight.

Anyway, I have an AM3 MB and am thinking about just spending $95 on a Phenom II X4 965 since that would be a drop in upgrade. But my question is.... would that improve performance? Aside from the extra two cores (which I don't even know if silverlight will take advantage of), I'm not sure if it's really any faster than the CPU I have (core for core).

Seems like crazy overkill to have a 125 watt quad core CPU in an HTPC but....... dunno what else to do here. The HD content plays just fine on my i7.

Silverlight has had the ability to allow hardware acceleration for some time now.
Click start.
Click all programs.
Select Microsoft Silverlight.
Open Silverlight.
Select the playback tab.
Check the box to allow acceleration.

See if that doesn't solve the problem.

Good luck, ddk

Thanks for the reply. Box is checked but it doesn't make any difference. I read somewhere that Silverlight can use VC-1 or h.264 and only h.264 can be hardware decoded on the video card. Netflix chooses to use VC-1 frown.gif

I think that´s half the problem ( ironically, Microsoft s own codec ) the other being bandwidth and Silverlight being buggy ,.
They also seem to have abandoned Silverlight ,
Netflix was talking about changing codecs but that was a while ago.
A dual core should be plenty in normal situations for the playback of HD. except with SL I think there´s some extra work on the DRM side as well as decoding the VC1 stream ?

Have you tried other browsers/ overclocking a bit reinstalling SL ?
Also read somewhere that some people were running it with the AMD e350s, one guy said he resolved his issue by turning off coolnquiet in the bios , don´t know if it´s worth a try.

I've tried un-installing Siverlight yes but it didn't help. Have not tried overclocking though. I will try disabling cool and quiet and see if that helps.

I went ahead and ordered a 965BE CPU since it was only $95. Hopefully it fits in the case I have and clears the blu-ray drive.

I'll post updates next week after I get the new CPU installed.
