Remote desktop (VNC) won't work with monitor unplugged

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

So I just set up my own file server at home running on Ubuntu 13.04 (desktop OS). As I'm looking to running it headless with only a network cable and power cable connected, I am hoping to manage it via a remote desktop client such as TightVNC. It installed fine and works great when there is a monitor connected to the server, even when the monitor is turned off. But when there is no monitor cable connected (just connecting a monitor cable without a monitor on the other end doesn't work, I tried), I am no longer able to connect via TightVNC. It starts up and shows me a screen but it's frozen and I can't click on anything.

I found a couple of results on Google for this problem but there wasn't really a working solution. Has anyone had this happen to them before or know a workaround so that I can run the server without a monitor attached?

Cheers,
S

You could try using SSH if you don't mind not having a GUI

Sounds to me like X server isn't running, best thing I can think of is running ssh with X11 forwarding (check the man page for ssh for the flag you need) and make sure X11 forwarding is enabled in the sshd config

I thought that at first too, but then he said that he can see the desktop but that it's just frozen. Even so, I'd still wager it's an xorg issue

I think he's running this from Windows, so he'll need something like Xming on his client if he wants to do any X forwarding.
