[Case/Build Log] Custom Solidworks Designed CNC Machined Acetal Case, GTX Titans, EK Watercooling...

Thread Starter
Welcome to the thread about my custom CNC machined acetal test bench. Built with the idea and theme of EK clean acetal waterblocks.

The idea was I wanted a testbench that could accommodate my ideal test bench layout better than my current modded case.

  • A testbench I could with quick disconnects disconnect the motherboard and components from, lift off, make changes to and clip back in and altering the loop would be that easy and I accomplished it perfectly.
  • A testbench I could fit everything I wanted to without wasted space but also have room for dual PSUs to upgrade to in the future.
  • A testbench I could run dual fans actively cooling the underside of the motherboard and would also exhaust the intake air from the radiators.
  • A testbench that would match the theme of my build and I would love enough to keep for sometime. Something truly unique and that would showcase my build but also be as attractive as the components.
  • A testbench that could accommodate a wide variety of upgrades like XL ATX boards and E ATX boards without changing the way the board looks ie: dual motherboard standoffs both centred.

Update:

Probably taking this whole thing apart and changing it up soon so figured I'd hurry up and finish it. Just a mock up of the cables, need to paint the fan rings and have the SSD holders created and mount the SSDs and then It'll be done but these might be the last pictures of the Z87 system depending on what happens so here are some pictures.

Here's the design and how it went from a picture in my head to a 3D model and then something I could touch and hold in my hands.

Click below for the original first post and the journey of designing it in Solidworks, outsourcing the CNC machining to China and having it made and now building the loop and finalising the hardware.

Yo,

So I'm fond of my current build except for the case. I've modded my existing case specifically for the Gigabyte GA X79 UD7 but after everything I've done it's still lacking in quality and features and is too big and although it has room for two 360mm Monstas you can't run tubing inside with radiators that large.

Original Build log and how I modded the original case to include as many of these features as possible: http://www.overclock.net/t/1390841/build-log-dimastech-watercooled-test-bench-open-case-gtx-titan-ek-clean-blocks-portrait-surround

So I'm going to build a new case that will be designed for any ATX, EATX or XLATX motherboard unlike mine which is currently only modded for this particular motherboard. The new motherboard I'll be using is an EATX board but I plane to keep this a while so it being compatible with a lot of different boards and sizes will be important for the future.

The new case will make it easier to take apart the waterloop, modify my cable management and will be smaller but make better use of the available space. Stand out features will be:

- Designed to support and perfectly centre any ATX, EATX or XLATX board that conforms to those standards.
- Supports active cooling for the underside of the motherboard, particularly the CPU, chipset and VRM sections with two 120mm fans.
- Cable management holes for zip ties in roof of the case.
- Cable management holes and tubing routing holes for 19mm tubing on all sides of the board.
- Area for horizontally mounted reservoir up to 250mm wide.
- Supports up to two 360mm monsta radiators in push/or any other 360mm radiator in push/pull.
- Supports up to two 360x35mm radiators in push with dual 200mm PSUs.
- Supports 15-20mm fan spacing for radiators.
- Supports up to four SSD/HDD mounted in the roof of the case.
- Removable roof.
- Non linear layout. Similar layout to my current build.

Here are some teasers of the build I currently have in Solidworks. Build isn't even half finished yet but you should you an idea of what it'll look like.

This is how the layout for the motherboard standoffs will work. ATX and EATX centred on the roof of the case and then the XLATX standoffs symmetrically centred with a second set of holes so you don't get stupid alignment issues when changing boards.

Heres the layout of the roof. 120mm fans, all tubing holes support 19mm tubing, hidden cable managment holes at the front and between the fans and front tubing holes, support for the two stacked SSD mounts.

Will be extruding holes in the base for cable management, holes for cable ties and some other ideas I have as well as for mounting the usual HDD cages, PSU, pump etc. The final layout will be similar to what I currently have setup in my build but also accept a more traditional test bench style layout.

Won't have power or reset buttons. If you're using a test bench odds are you're using an overclockers motherboard and the new trend is they all come with power and reset buttons on the boards now. Power and reset buttons just introduce layout issues.

Still a lot to do before it's even close to finished but let me know what you think.

Interesting, but it looks identical to all the other test benches....particularly the LD bench.

Subbed tho.

If you need any help with SW then feel free to PM me.im guessing you didnt buy a licence?

Not at all,I'm interested in seeing where this goes.
As for the licence, not sure if the OP dropped £3000 on a full SW suite which includes support.
I am lucky that got my seat from a bulk deal with an engineering firm im close to.
The 'downloaded' (you know what im talking about) version doesn't get that helpful support.
