How to "controll" HTPC?

Thread Starter
I've got a HTPC that i just use mouse and keyboard with, However, it's quite annoying becauce i have to use the couch to navigate the mouse.
How do you controll your HTPC?

I would like an option where i could use a remote to simply select a movie inside a program, However i do not know which program to take, let alone if a remote is available.
Or is there another option?

What kind of software do you use to run your HTPC? WIndows Media Center, Plex, XMBC, etc.

I use a remote but my HTPC boots straight into XBMC and shutdown via XBMC so I don't need a pointing device like a your setup.

Somewhat of a subtle difference, but did you mean Windows Media Center or Player? Player isn't really HTPC software per se. It has a somewhat limited video/audio file format allowance, doesn't have any app integration (hulu, netflix, etc), etc.

I would say if you're looking for a remote to interface w/a Windows environment, you should look into a Windows Media Center remote. A good aesthetic one would be the HP Pavilion HDX Remote.

An important thing to note would be that not all MCE remotes function the same. Some remotes just send windows commands via the APPCOMMAND function in windows (this is probably the type of remote you want to look into if you're actually using WMP).

A good resource to see how these remotes really work, if you're interested, would be here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Using_a_Microsoft_remote_control_in_Windows

I control my htpc from my Nexus 4 lol. I use a wireless mouse/keyboard software from the google play store. Load up the software on both mobile and htpc, let em connect and it's all good. Link Below.
