Clean driver install, is it that important?

If a new driver comes out I always update and download the latest driver without uninstalling the previous. Ive never had any probs with this (i think). Ive just put a new graphivs card in my machine and in the manual it recommends this method of uninstalling old drivers.

Should I change to uninstalling first. Is it just from control panel, uninstall program?

I typically just select Custom in the Nvidia driver installer and check "Perform a clean installation". It takes a little bit longer but so far I have yet to run into any issues.

If you are using AMD and switching for another AMD GPU I think you can just keep the current installed drivers and switch the card out as I have personally done this and had no issues. Switched out a 5870 2GB for a 7870 2GB a few months ago using the same drivers and the CCC automatically detected it no issues.

Just to be on the safe side though, I'd uninstall the drivers from Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features. Then just install the latest ones from the Nvidia / AMD website.
