With a golden 920 like that, personally I don't think the 4770K would feed my "hunger" either. They make a valid point of just riding it out until it dies....honestly surprised it hasn't already, but that's besides the point.
I'm in a similar boat and plan on rocking my 2700K until the next gen hex core i7's are available.

This. 4.5Ghz 24/7 on an i7 920 is very impressive, but at those volts it has to be running hot enough to degrade quickly.

either keep the 920 or go to a used sandy or ivy with how low the haswell are clocking and they run hotter im not sure it would be worth it.

^^^ that sounds about right to me. Wait and see what IB-E looks like then think about what to do. What you got now is still damn good so no rush really. I'm waiting and seeing myself, but not at 4.5Ghz like you smile.gif

I think I will keep my 920 system and either do a 4770k or a 3930k upgrade.

I kind of wish intel would be like AMD and keep using the same socket but.

We cannot have everything can we?biggrin.gif

Like my moto says Go hard or Go Home, might as well push a CPU to it limits even if it only lasts 3 years you get excellent use out of it.

Then you can upgrade and not feel bad that you are getting rid of a CPU that never got to see the light of day.

I'm in the same boat.
I need to upgrade my GPU and CPU as I find the performance lacking now, and and the second GPU is now dying.
I have an i7 920 D0, which I pretty much always had overclocked at 4.2[1.256V]~4.5GHz[1.384V] smile.gif
I have a Sandisk Extreme SSD 240GB (Sata 6Gb) (which looks like it might be failing a bit, or it may be the motherboard(Gigabyte G1.Sniper) (I went through 3 Asus P6T Deluxe V2's before I ran out of warranty, than got the Gigabyte).
I'm running it at 4GHz on air right now (Prolimatech Mega Shadow Deluxe, push pull setup).
I'm currently fixing & modding my watercooling; (hence the current low 4GHz clock and air cooling) Custom water loop with 3x120mm rad, 1/2" ID tubes, MCP655-B, etc.

First I had 2 x GTX 280's, overclocking them and running lots of intense games over the years finally killed one, and now the second one (now without overclock or SLI frown.gif ) is also dying, and it seems my motherboard is dying, or possibly my CPU.

In short, I don't know if it's worth for me to upgrade to another CPU when if I get the 4770K, I'm not getting more cores, or really any more power, I want to wait until the next gen 6/8 cores come out to upgrade, but I kind of can't or rather don't want to because all the current Intel CPU's that are out there are not powerful enough for the price, or too expensive to get a decent one.

My i7 920 D0 was ~$392 when I got it, I want to be able to, 4 years later, expect to be able to buy a 6 core now for the same price, with better performance. Yet here I am 4 years later, and it looks like I'll need to pay a similar price or more to get equivalent or more power!

Back your OC off to 4ghz and give your chip a break man biggrin.gif

Everything after sandy bridge has pretty much been a wash (not including the extreme processors of course).

I would look at saving up a lot and getting ivy bridge -E or haswell - E when it comes out.
