Need help deciding on Speakers - Page 2

UPDATE: I guess it's settled - I got a deal on a pair of Paradigm Shifts speakers at a significantly reduced price (130 less). I will be keeping the UMC200 on my short list future upgrades, especially as the Paradigms can be purchased as a single speaker.

Thanks again for your input and for pointing out emotiva!

Update 2: I've had the Shift A2's set up for a few days and am pretty impressed with them.

However! There seems to be an issue with the first few batches of Shift A2's that came out, the issue being a background hiss probably caused by the speakers internal amps. The hiss is easily masked when playing music at louder levels but audible when playing at lower volumes and dynamic music (piano, vocals) or when watching movies.

Shame really, as they do sound great otherwise and I am very impressed with them.

Hey I am sorry I did not read your posts till just now. This thread got lost in all the other threads. I usually just go to the I've posted link and look for stuff that is still active and I must have been away for a day or two when you posted this.

As for the hiss I would talk with customer service about that. I wouldn't deal with it if I where you. One of the benefits of the progression from Vinyl to CD to SACD/DVDa for going from analog to 16 bit to 20 bit then 24 bit is to have a better signal to noise ratio.

By having a hiss you are hurting that. There tons reasons for the changes in media but that is one of the benefits.

Glad you enjoy them, just see if you can get them replaced with ones that don't hiss. Also are you sure that it is a problem with them? Did you read that somewhere because it is possible (but unlikely in your case) that the hiss is from something else.

No worries wink.gif

I'm positive it is the speakers. I tried different sources, different power outlets, as well as various cable combinations. The hiss is inherently with the speakers themselves and I will be returning them within the next few days.

I will update when I've made my final choice and how it's working out.

Cool... totally understand the size issue with the speakers and stands have you thought about mounting them to the wall... They need to be mounts that you can aim and not mounts that make the speakers flush against the wall. Might not be an option for you but it is something to consider.
