Using a WD Green as primary drive.

Thread Starter
Just wondering if there is any risk / danger using a WD green drive as a primary drive?

Not worried about performance, just reliability of it.

I don't have any hard failure rate figures, but I wouldn't expect it to be any more likely to fail than any other consumer HDD, in general.

There's no problem using the Caviar Greens as primary drives. They're just a bit slower.

If I'm not mistaken, the warranty on Greens are 3 years. If you prefer, you could go for Blacks, which, while more expensive, carry a 5 year warranty.

WD Green drives have a firmware that stops the spindle during time of no activity and lowers the spindle speed during low activity. They do have a higher chance of burning the spindle motor but honestly it is probably no more likely to fail than some other type. I will say that they are quite slow though, generally they are for external drives that don't have the OS to tell then when to spin down and for a secondary data drive. Just my two cents, good luck!

i agree, just like using any consumer drive there is always a risk of drive failure generally speaking. that said i wouldn't let that deter you or even say WD greens are bad. Always a good idea to have a back up solution as well especially of important data just in case.

Cheers everyone,

I just bought a 1Tb Green, and was going to clone the data on my wifes 2Tb Samsung (only about 800Gb worth) to the green.

Then put the Samsung in the HTPC, which is running out of room.
