I don't think LGA will cease to exist either. But I imagine that companies like Dell will love the BGA mainstream processors, they will do whatever they can to increase margins. As for different motherboards, there really are just a couple of them. Motherboard makers seems to put out a gazillion variants just to try to get attention. Dell will probably have just a couple of variants, just different sized ones for the main form factors. Two or three will cover them pretty good. They'll keep the costs down for sure. Look at microservers, these have been BGA pretty much for awhile.

But we'll see. I just don't think it will necessarily be a bad thing.

I really like the 8-core Xeons that are around today. A unlocked one would be pretty sweet, even if it doesn't appear until the beginning of 2015. It will probably be stupid expensive like the Xeons are today, they probably don't want to undercut their Xeon business. If Intel keeps with their pricing today, ie 1000 bucks for the top chip, it will be kinda cheap. That's why I think it will be more expensive than that. But time will tell.

Could you imagine this in practice? 4 watercooled (therefor single slot) graphics cards on a Haswell-E mATX board? Ridiculous. drool.gif

I actually drool over the possibility for cramming 6-7 GPUs on a E-ATX or w/e full size board for GPU compute.
Unfortunately atm the programs I am interested in are optimized for CUDA, so GCN solutions, no matter how much faster in OpenCL or easier to fit in single slots, are out of the question. mad.gif

Yeah, it sure sucks mad.gif
I really hope the scientific community (plus Adobe and the like) will move away from closed stuff like CUDA and onto open standards like OpenCL and the like. Maybe something will happen now when Intel pushes OpenCL too. Adobe did demo their OpenCL stuff at Computex, a good sign.

That would only happen if the price range changed from the historical precedent. If they said the future prices would be 5980x (8 core) = $1k; 5930k (6 core) = $600 and 5820k (6 core) = $300-$400; I would imagine most people on the board would pretty excited. Now if they pulled an Nvidia and jacked the prices up 25%-100% for their chips and claim "It's ok because It's not apart of the normal lineup" then there would be outrage. can you tell i'm bitter?

Oh come on, you should only be bitter if you actually had bought the Titan....did you? I actually kind of hope the 5980X comes out as a 8 core CPU while the 5960K is a 6 core partially because I want some justification for going for that black sticker. The 980X had good reason for being a leg up from the 970. Unlocked and released months before.

The other reason is, and I wont even deny it, is the ePeen and envy inducing status of the extreme edition. redface.gif

Well no one should have wanted a pentium 4 EE and the i7 965 owners got screwed royally after the D0 stepping of 920s came out and they all out OC'd the old extreme editions. tongue.gif
