First WC setup - some questions

Thread Starter
Brand new to WC'ing and I'm looking at the following setup:

Alphacool Nexxos XT45 180mm radiator
Alphacool Nexxos XT45 120mm radiator
Koolance QDC3 fittings
Alphacool Ceramic Pump and reservoir combo

and either:

Koolance 380i
Koolance NX680

OR

Heat Killer GPU X3 copper
Heat Killer CPU REV 3.0 copper

They might seem odd radiator sizes, but I'm running a TJ08e mATX so a limited in what will fit.

Any comments on the above items from experience?

Are there any issues mixing nickel (Koolance CPU/GPU) and copper (radiators)?

I want the setup to be as quiet/silent as possible and hear (pardon the pun) that this pump is the way to go? Any other alternatives?

What tubing and coolant do people recommend? How often does this need to be changed/drained?

What could I adequately cool with just the 180mm?

Any other advice?

Heat Killer CPU REV 3.0 copper was rated number 1 performing cpu block in more than one roundup I viewed for this year. Here is one

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?285753-CPU-water-blocks-roundup

You might be able to get a cpu AND one gpu under a nexxxos 120. Thats a dual 120 right? As long as you get some nice static pressure optimized fans like noctua, I think it can do it. And as long as you dont live near the equator biggrin.gif

People love promochil tubing. I use a koolance liquid, but I hear the best results come from straight distilled water and some biocide mixture.

There shouldnt be anyn problems mixing the copper and nickel components.

A well put together, clean loop needs cleaning about once every 2-3 years.

I dont know about that pump, but I have a koolance pmp 450 with a variable speed nob. At 1/3 speed, the minute noise that the pump makes matches the resonate frequency of my case/rad fans and they nearly cancel each other out. If you're doing just a cpu and video card, you really could leave the pump at minimum and it should be enough to keep your loop cool.

Other advice... plan it all out first, visualize every part in your case, even draw it out. Then make your order. You might want to order some 45 degree fittings incase you have to make some tight turns.

Good Luck!

fill out the rig builder so we know what you need to cool and where you can put it all. rigbuilder is up there in the top right and corner.
as quiet as possible isnt happening with 2 single fan rads. you need at least 2x 240 rads to begin to approach 'quiet as possible'.
also, what kind of budget do you have?

Thanks for the replies.

The 120mm is this - just a single, which would be at the exhaust.

The 180mm is this. My case has a 180mm intake which is where this would go.

Unfortunately there's no room anywhere for any a 240mm rad, but as the 180 has 10% more surface area I though it would do OK? I'll run a Phobya fan on this one, and a Noiseblocker on the 120.

Layout wise I was thinking CPU > 120 > GPU > 180.

I've updated the rig builder with my current specs - basically 3930K and a GTX670SC that I need to cool. I'm only running a mild overclock of 4.4 @ 1.3v.

i lol every time i read 'mild overclock' at 4.4ghz. that is a 1+ghz overclock. there is nothing mild about that. what do you all consider an extreme or approaching extreme overclock?
under normal circumstances, those rads will cool both blocks but you wouldnt be silent. you could have somewhat quiet with the right fans. your problem is going to be that you will pull air to the 120 that was already heated by the 180. that 120 rad will do little in helping cool. you need fresh air and lots of it to mix with that warmed air. i know first hand how much of a difference it makes.
