Implications of the AMD console sweep for future PC games

Polygon has an interesting brief interview with AMD up where they talk about AMD"s 3 for 3 sweep with the xBone, PS4 and WiiU all being based on AMD APUs. The article goes on to mention the close partnership their tech engineering teams have with game developers and the recent inclusion of TressFX in Tomb Raider.

I am near the end of a new gaming PC build and was going to go for the GTX 760 as my GPU, but I do have to wonder, will this console gen lead to better graphical performance on Radeon cards due to AMD's influence in AAA game development tools ?

I wouldnt worry too much about it, seems most of the next-gen console game demo's were running on current gen Nvidia hardware. You might be right with features like TressFX, but It's not like PC ports will require AMD gpu's. It will simply be the reverse of the current PhysX situation.

But I'm no fanboy, If the thought of getting a 7970 makes you more comfortable then go for it.

Probably. Also bout the nvidia gpu and intel cpu. All the consoles previous and next run on pc on E3. The first xbox was running from an apple if i remember. They just simulate the game with brute force thats why they use something with 2x,3x more power.

lol what? The first xbox used a fruit? It uses a pentium 3 cpu and some nvidia based gpu.

A very important point here is It’s certain that at least one major game maker will embrace AMD’s tech. EA DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine will default to Mantle—not DirectX—in Windows rigs running GCN-based graphics cards and APUs, with the blockbuster Battlefield 4 set to be the first title to support the technology after a December update.


Mantle API can offer upto 9X or more the performance of directX or open GL API's this brings massive performance boosts to AMD / ATI / Radeon hardware in games that support Mantle for both console and PC so far Activision and EA have jumped onboard with MANTLE API.


and HSA and HUMA are all AMD / ATI / Radeon also Nvidia and Intel are not able to use these so yes next gen games for consoles and PC could very well put AMD / ATI/ Radeon ahead in performance or atleast make them even which I dont see with the performance benefits and optimizations and Mantle I can see it passing them fairly easily.


EA and Activision have already said they will default with Mantle API on PC and if hardware is not AMD GCN architecture will fall back to directX or open GL which is a huge performance decrease Mantle offers upto 9x or more the perfomance boost on exact same Radeon / ATI / AMD hardware over directX or openGL and offers no performance increase for Intel / Nvidia at all. I also forgot to mention you know how consoles get huge performance increases because hardware is used so efficient it is literally to the metal / hardware LVL well this is what Mantle brings to PC from console and xbox one / PS4 from what I understand are using the Mantle API which is crossplatform so automatically will port over to the PC and will only benefit AMD / ATI / Radeon hardware.

This is a bit of info from a previous post of mine that has sony directly mentioning the above stuff without saying Mantle API


THIS IS FROM ONE OF MY PREVIOUS POSTS DIRECTLY FROM SONY

The system is also set up to run graphics and computational code synchronously, without suspending one to run the other. Norden says that Sony has worked to carefully balance the two processors to provide maximum graphics power of 1.843 teraFLOPS at an 800Mhz clock speed while still leaving enough room for computational tasks. The GPU will also be able to run arbitrary code, allowing developers to run hundreds or thousands of parallelized tasks.


Sony is building its CPU ( x86 same as PC AMD 8core ) on what it's calling an extended DirectX 11.1+ feature set ( ATI HD 7850 equivalent directX11 APU ), including extra debugging support that is not available on PC platforms ( presently ) . This system will also give developers more direct access to the shader pipeline than they had on the PS3 or through DirectX itself. "This is access you're not used to getting on the PC, and as a result you can do a lot more cool things and have a lot more access to the power of the system," Norden said. A low-level API will also let coders talk directly with the hardware in a way that's "much lower-level than DirectX and OpenGL," but still not quite at the driver level.

The 360 used a semi-custom IBM PowerPC processor, yes similar to a design Apple used back in the early 2000's. The Pentium III was used in the original xbox, not the 360.
