Fan position question (help a newbie)

Thread Starter
Doing my first build and had a question for all you experts.

I just have one front panel fan on my Fractal Design Define R4. I can put it at the bottom where it will blow over my HDDs (i've got 2 HHDs and 1 ssd there) or I can move it up so that it's in the middle of the front panel and blows directly over my motherbo, gcard, and CPU (I'm removing the extra hard drive cages for extra air flow). Is this second position better? I don't OC and I don't SLI. I assume keeping the GPU and CPU cool is best and HDs don't need much cooling. I use 2, 3tb HDs and tend to move and download lots of content on them.

At budget, and not OCing so I'm not planning on putting in new fans.

Thanks.

Whichever spot that gives it less impedance, which is probably the top position. The air above the HDDs is still being exchanged while aiming the bulk of the airflow towards the area that will consume and/or exhaust it, the CPU,GPU as you say.

EDIT: if you like tinkering and are only using one HDD, you can unscrew the bottom rack, drill some holes and use those rubber HDD mounts to mount it to the bottom of the case. That is what I did. Then I also got 2 more matching Fractal fans to fill the other spots.

Cool! This is my first build so I'm gonna take it easy.

Will my the hard drives (in the lower position) have adequate cooling when there's just a fan in the upper front panel position?

They will be fine.
The name of the game is to exchange air through the whole case rather then blowing directly on specific items. If you have lots of fanage it's a different story, but for now you want the air to flow through the case with little resistance.

If your HDD is has S.M.A.R.T. you can view it's temperature, amongst other parameters with programs like HDDTune etc. Have fun.
