so here is my story. i used to have windows vista on my laptop and it started getting slow so i clean installed windows 7 64 bit.
i installed all the drivers for my laptop but now i have horrible ping in some games. for example league of legends on vista i had 20 ping now i have upwards of 80+ average. i have a sony vaio VGN-NW130J. i have tried re-installing the wireless drivers. the laptop does come with something called smartwi connection utility and it says my wireless switch(switch on the side of my laptop to turn on/off wifi card) is not on even though it is and i have connection. (I'm typing on the laptop). i don't know what it is. every time i try to install the wireless driver windows says it might not have been installed correctly. i downloaded the right drivers. i don't know what's up. should I try and fix the smartwi connection utility? maybe try vista 64 drivers for wifi?

could be you have a different manufacturer. if sony offers install its dedicated hardware scanner and let it decide which driver to install

Under Internet Options (IE), goto connections, LAN, and uncheck automatically detect. Ive had instances where this resolves slow connections, ping issues, etc. As for the drivers...

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=VGNNW130J&LOC=3#/downloadTab

they have for Win7 x64 3 drivers listed, start with the most recent and work your back. There is also a patch for the SmartWi thing. In the end you probably wouldnt be able to notice a difference in 20-100 ping in LoL. It could simply boil down to differences in Win7 and vista and how the drivers were written.

speedtest.net has a ping test as well, id think itd make a better base line to compare ping in vista and win 7. LoL may use different servers game to game and other peoples ping could affect yours too.

that's the exact site i downloaded the drivers from. i have found that just disabling the smartwi thing at startup works better than having it run. but i havent tested out LoL with out it yet. i seem to have the same ping as i do in vista from speedtest.net. in LoL I always had 20-25 ping. but il try it out with out that "driver" tomorrow
