E6850 3Ghz Dual upgraded to Q6600 2.4Ghz Quad (Overclocked) Question/Help!

Hi everyone, before i upgraded to Q6600 Quad Core 2.4Ghz i was running a E6850 3Ghz overclocked to 3.6Ghz
A friend gave me the Quad chip for £20.. bargain lol. So anyways after putting the chip in and booting up, i went into my bios. It said i was running 3Ghz.. So my question is i know that the bios is saved but when i checked the overclocking settings, bios had 95% back to default settings. Fox Ratio was at 1.1 tho which was set back on the old dualcore chip. Cpu fsb overclock was set back to default too at 1333. (Memory is at 2.115v)

So my question is, the chip already being overclocked yet settings are mostly at default.

Thanks, hope i made is easy to understand.

I want to overclock it to say 3.4Ghz or something. My cooler is ok for that on this chip.

Is this because i was overclocking my other chip and just kept the settings? So when this quad core went in, the settings applied to that too?

Yes, your settings have stayed in the cmos and the 1333mhz fsb will be making the q6600 run at 3ghz.

Many thanks. Strange that i can leave the voltage at 1.256.
I think i may go up to 3.4 tho, upping the voltage to 1.336

Again thanks.

What motherboard are you using?
I'm using p7n SLI from MSI and due to a combination of bad airflow and bad vrdroop I'm stuck at 2.73-2.8 ghz.

I hate to say it but unfortunately those Nvidia chipset boards from back then were not amazing at overclocking the quads.

I remember my first build years ago with a P5N32 and a Q6600. I couldnt get above 3Ghz at all.

And Jason, I am also in Hampshire thumb.gif

The 650i's and the 680i's were poor at it, but the 750i,780i were much better.

Exactly this, I had a eVGA 680i SLi board that had serious voltage problems and struggled to hold a Q6600 at 3.2Ghz. Then I upgraded to a 780i SLi and 3.6Ghz was my stable for the next 6 months until I went over to an X48 board with the 45nm Core 2 Quads.

I'm using a Foxconn P35A Board, pretty good for overclocking.

What i'm getting now. Still not got to 3.4Ghz as not tried. Will try later, bed time tongue.gif
