The initial cost is going to be more with the i7 3820 vs the i7 4770k. If you go with the i7 3820, you are going to spend more on the motherboard because it is a 2011 setup. And the only reason to go that route is if you plan or running more that 2 video cards, or if you are video editing, encoding, etc. Basically the 2011 system is a desktop platform based off a server chipset (C600/X79) with more PCIE lanes.

With the 4770K, you get the newest Haswell architecture with a Z87 chipset on the 1150 platform. Haswell with the Z87 chipset has better architecture like native USB 3.0 and more SATA 6.0 ports over the 2011 setup, but less PCIE lanes. But it is more than enough for 2 video cards. Haswell has just been released, and it is not yet proven to be a good overclocker. But it does have slightly better architecture than Ivy bridge and an improved memory controller. But it does run hotter than Ivy bridge.

I would say that if you are not familiar enough with the 2011 platform and don't already know much about it, you don't need it (it would be more PC than you need). its one of those platforms that you would already have decided on getting due to the type of work you do...

The 3820 is more or less equal to the 3770K, so there would be little difference.

However, the 3820 offers quad channel memory and 40 PCIe lanes for multi-GPU setups. It also comes with a pretty old (and as many say buggy) chipset, so think this out too.

IMO don't go with LGA2011 if you don't have a 3/4 GPU setup in mind. Except of course if you're going with a six core CPU.

Why do you call it dead? Please tell me one reason why you shouldn't get an LGA1155 system (other than it being dead).
Don't get me wrong,i'm not insulting LGA 1155.As you can see,i run one with an i5-3570k.More than happy with it and i'll definetely keep that mobo+cpu combo for 2-3 years, without a doubt.By dead i mean - there isn't any upgrade path.Let's say you get an i7-3770k.After 3 years, you'll have to buy a new CPU and mobo combo. While with LGA 1150/2011,there will still be new cpu's with more power that'll fit in your motherboard.LGA 1155's processors are plenty for now and not much behind Haswell, but c'mon - same price, newer technology, upgrade path - why would you not choose it?

Go with a 4770K or a 4670K.

Newest platform with upcoming CPUs.
much better native sata 6gbps than with Z77
overall better features on the mobos
highest performance quad core chips unless you get an absolutely terrible clocker.

LGA2011 and 3820 only if you are going with 3 or 4 GPUs, need quad channel memory or are planning on upgrading to a 6-core IB-E chip this september.

Thanks for your help Ericeod and Daredevil, has cleared a lot up.

Listening to all your advice and doing a little research i think my best bet would be to get a i7-4770K.

Is this the one to get or could i benefit from getting a 4670K like DocotWorm said?

If you have no idea what you are talking about, it's best to shut it lest you get ridiculed.

I went from a Q9550 @ 4.2ghz to a i7 920 @ 4.2ghz
Big difference
Well not so much in single card, though still a noticeable difference, but SLI was a game changer. With my GTX470's no less.
Smoother game play and better frame rate, still have some benchmarks somewhere saved. Though Still have the Q9550 in my HTPC just only at 4ghz now. Still a Great chip

Though i7 defiantly does better with newer games, some on those older games really didn't like HT all that well.

OP I would go 4770k or 4670k.

you said you dont tend to OC, so why not go with the regular 4770 and save some money.
also, the non K models in intel's lines tend to come with more base features such as TSX-NI, etc.

Where in my post did I say gaming performance?

Ive owned both a QX9650 and QX9770 and first gen i7's. Now go and find some benchmarks for CPU's and not games. Since your benchmarks are proving simply that either CPU is not a bottleneck in that system, hence meaning the graphics card can work to its full potential under both configurations and hence the almost identical results.

Your choice of benchmark comparison shows a lack of understanding of general computing.

But fair play for noticing that games are not yet taking advantage of the incredibly powerful CPU's we have now.

Its funny how a system with a Q9650 clocked up to 4Ghz (Which i have also owned by the way), a pair of GTX480's, runs games just as well as my i7 950 set up used to.

Again thanks. I'll try Ebay and get one new in the next week or so.

Does anyone have any advice on a good board for this CPU?

In AsRock, Extreme 4 and Extreme 6 are both great boards for the price. Then gigabyte has their UD3H.
