Three monitors Radeon 6870?

post #1 of 9

Hi there!
I bought a Radeon 6870 a while ago, and have been running with two monitors for a while. However, I recently got a TV and I'd like to plug it in aswell, using all three monitors at the same time (not Eyefinity since it's different resolutions).

I have
a) a TV that can use HDMI and VGA
b) a BenQ 24" monitor that can use VGA and DVI
c) a Samsung 22" monitor that can use VGA and DVI

d) a DVI --> Mini DisplayPort converter (PASSIVE)
e) a DVI --> HDMI cable
f) and a lot of HDMI->HDMI, DVI->DVI and VGA->VGA cables

So my question is, how do I hook it up to get my three monitors to work? I've been searching around for a while and I've found some people saying I need to use an Active MDP -> DVI adapter, instead of the passive one I got, but I've also found some people saying they got it to work using a passive one.

So, three monitors, 5 inputs (1xHDMI, 2xDVI, 2xMiniDisplayPort) - how do I do this?

Is there any software or something that might help me? THANKS FOR YOUR AWESOME ANSWERS GUYS!

Avtive displsy port to my understanding is what you need. Is this being used for gaming or something else?....technicly a 6870 can run 3 monitors but if you plan on gaming you might run into a memory bandwith problem having 1gb, so,if you wanna game i would suggest 6870 crossfire for the extra boost ull need it in most newer games.if its just for browsing and what not you can get by with 1 card i would say.your best bet would be to use same resolution monitors for gaming otherwise ull end up with a weird setup that might not even work. You need 2 dvi cables plus an active displsy port to hdmi adapter? I have my 2 monitors hooked up via 2 dvi cables for eyefinity but i use same resution, i tried doing the same thing like you but mine didnt work for some reason i was told on account of the diffrent resolutions.

So Im gonna game on one monitor, Facebook / movie on another and random **** that I won't look at on the TV (like Mumble, CoreTemp ect), so I don't care about the resolution on the TV.

You will need an active display port adapter. This is what you need.

Then you just plug them in and set it up just like you do when hooking a second screen up. For the tv you may need one with an hdmi.

I think the good thing about hdmi is it has audio as well, heres what i noticed so far....Vga had a decent picture, hdmi i had flickering problems from time to time,dvi so far has the sharpest and best looking picture out of those 3! at least with me it felt that way.I cant comment on didplsy port and mini display port i havent used them yet.

Iam pretty sure yes. I would double check on the eyefinity thread if i were you.Just so you dont go out and spend money on something you dont need!....so i think ull need active displsy port to hdmi adapter,you said that monitor has hdmi & what other hook/ups are on there?
