SSD Newbie!

Thread Starter
So, I have browsed around and have found forums regarding the question of "How to install OS on SSD and everything else on HDD". However, they all seem over complicated or just not right! Every forum I have found seems to give the most circuitous, round about response that somewhat answers this question. So, the question is already known, but here is the hardware that will be involved (Both items brand new and will be starting from scratch.)

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239045
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

So, when I've asked around, I got a mix of responses, but the most prevalent response seemed to be this:

1) Plug only the SSD in.
2) Install the OS like any other hard drive.
3) Once that is complete, plug in the other hard drive.
4) Once it's hooked up, just run your computer, and anytime you install a program, like a new game, when it asks you where you want it to be saved to, just select the HDD rather than the SSD.

This seems a little too good/easy to be true. If anyone could shed some light on this that would be great! I know what RAIDs are and things of that nature, but I've never felt the need to implement RAIDs; so in that aspect I'm a complete novice, but willing to learn! Thanks!

Ok, you got the basic steps right, but you'll need to make sure of a few things if its an Intel-based system:

- Plug in your SSD to a native SATA port on the mobo which is powered by the Intel controller, SATAIII if available.
- Set the SATA mode in Bios to 'AHCI'.
- After installing the OS, make sure you install your chipset drivers & Intel drivers.
- Install Windows updates.
- Now connect your HDD. (make sure to switch off your PSU or unplug it when adding/removing any type of hardware).
- Go into 'My Computer', right-click your C drive (SSD) & click 'Properties', un-check the box at the bottom which says 'Allow files on this drive to have contents Indexed...etc', click apply then ok.
- Type in the search box 'prefetch' & 'super prefetch' & disable those services for your SSD.

The rest is what you said.

This has nothing to do with RAID btw.

Here's how to put your rig in your sig:

Yeah, my mobo is the Z77 Sabertooth which comes preset on AHCI so that won't be an issue! and what is the significance of indexing?

It supposedly reduces access times for mechanical drives & not needed at all with SSDs due to the very low seek times they have (0.1ms compared to 12ms of an average HDD).
I also heard that it can shorten the life of your SSD drive in the long run.

Is it a new HDD?

If so, then right-click 'My Computer' and click on 'Manage'.
Click 'Disk Management' under 'Storage' on the far left. Format your HDD.
