Q9650 & Asus P5K-Pro

Hi all,

My third Intel cpu and as I always do, it's time to overclock. I have the Q9650 (upgraded from Q6600) and have tried some stock settings from my Q6600 set up but I'm having issues. Here's my bios settings from when I originally had a core2duo E8400 3.0ghz sucessfully overclocked to 4.0ghz. I just can't seem to get anything stable, not sure if my memory settings is holding me back here.

Ai Overclock Tuner : Manual

FSB Strap to North Bridge : Auto
FSB Frequence : 444
PCIE Frequency : Auto
DRAM Frequency : DDR2-1067

DRAM Timing Control : Manual

- RAS# to CAS# Delay : 6 DRAM Clocks
- RAS# PRE Time : 6 DRAM Clocks
- RAS# ACT Time : 18 DRAM Clocks
- RAS# to RAS# Delay : Auto
- REF Cycle Time : 60 DRAM Clocks
- WRITE Recovery Time : Auto
- WRITE to READ Delay : Auto
- READ to PRE Time : Auto
DRAM Static Control : Auto
Transaction Booster : Auto

CPU Voltage : 1.35625
CPU PLL Voltage : Auto
FSB Termination Voltage : Auto
DRAM Voltage : 2.2
NB Voltage : 1.33
SB Voltage : Auto
Clock Over-Charging Voltage : Auto

Load-Line Calibration : Enabled
CPU GTL Voltage Reference : Auto
NB GTL Voltage Reference : Auto
CPU Spread Spectrum : Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum : Disabled

Would those figures work for the Q9650? Moreso for the CPU Voltage, DRAM Voltage and NB Voltage. I have tried experimenting with the CPU voltage but it struggles to even boot.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

TIA

HJ

Apologies ... memory I have is CM2X2048-8500C5 x 2 (XMS2).

If anyone asks about my set up ... according to my board this is my MAX spec speed/memory size.

Can I potentially damage my memory with these settings? Haven't experimented with them as of yet..

I've pushed a little towards 4.2ghz as my cooler keeps it much cooler than my previous fan (also a hell of a lot quieter!).

Problem is I'm hitting an issue with my memory. It's rated at 1066 but it's showing as 1120 -- now I know the memory should be good to be overclocked but should I be concerned about memory voltages? I pushed a little past 2.2v but kept getting BSOD when I started Prime95.

Any advice or suggestions on pushing my DDR2? (Now I feel old as we're so far on from DDR2 already!)

Can anyone suggest the best way to clock slightly higher than 4.0ghz -- my main issue is the memory, it has to overclock with the CPU but I'm nervous of voltages as they currently run a 2.2v and beyond shows in red figures (which I take to mean *dangerous*). If I clock my CPU to 4.25ghz my memory shows at 1124 (or thereabouts), but my memory is running at 1066. Can it be pushed this far? Other than pushing the voltages, are there any other settings I can later to help here?

Ok first of all, Q9650 is one of the fastest chips for socket 775 so you are in luck.

Secondly, max voltages allowed in S775 are as follows courtesy of Anandtech:

So, 2.2V is okay. Your memory modules are set to run at 533 MHz with 2.1V anyway, so 2.2V is np.

1120 MHz is usually the OC limit for 1066 MHz memory unless you are lucky or you have got really high quality memory. To OC them further, you need to give more voltage to your Northbridge. I suggest 1.5V. Your board does not have a large enough NB heatsink to push more than 1.5V on it for 24/7 usage but if you feel lucky, try to push 1.6V and see how much further you can OC your RAM.

On this specific board, even 1120 MHz DDR2 is an achievement in and of itself IMO, since your old P35 board only supports up to DDR2 1066, while newer P45 boards like mine support up to DDR2 1200 or even DDR2 1300+.

To reach 4200 MHz you need 467 MHz Bus Speed (4200/9=467). There are only two memory configurations that can make it with your RAM, 1:1 and 4:5.

4:5 means that your RAM must be able to run properly at 1.25*467=584 MHz i.e. 1168 MHz effective clock, a quite impossible feat for the quality of memory you have (1066 MHz PC2-8500), and the type of motherboard (P35 rated at 1066 MHz max).

So, your only other option is to set your memory to 1:1 and thus run it at 467 MHz i.e. 934 MHz effective.

A word on BSODS on QXXX Core 2's:

1. STOP 0x124=Increase VCORE (CPU voltage)
2. IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL=Your memory cannot run at the speed you set due to: a. Low quality, b. Low voltage, c. Low NB voltage, d. Too tight timings
3. MEMORY MANAGEMENT=same as above
=======================================================================================================================================================

If you want to OC over 4GHz with memory speeds close or above 1200 MHz you can :

1. Buy a P45 motherboard (e.g. ASUS P5Q Deluxe) or an X48 motherboard (ASUS Rampage Formula)
2. Buy 1200 MHz rated memory (e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231283 GSKILL RIPJAWS PC2-9600)
3. Go DDR3 and buy a DDR3 P45 or X48 motherboard.

Alternatively, you may attempt to push your RAM to operate at 1170ish MHz or so by significantly loosening timings through MEMSET software, by pushing your NB voltage at or above 1.6V and your memory at or above 2.4V and see how long your MOBO and memory last you. (They won't last long IMO)

Your call.
