Black screen on idle, failure on reboot with 7950

Thread Starter
I'm having a problem where I will occasionally get a black screen on idle and the PC will fail on rebooting, with motherboard light indicating the problem is on the GPU. Only after a cold boot does it start properly.

The 7950 is mildly overclocked to 900 MHz, which has run fine for a long time at these settings. More recently, I have replaced the cooler and I believe the problem may have started then. The card runs very cool (~50C on load) so I can't imagine it having anything to do with overheating.

I have tried various versions of drivers and recently did a clean installation of Win 8 and the problem persists throughout. There is no BSOD or crash report and I don't see anything suspicious in Windows logs, unless I'm not looking in the right place. I would appreciate if anyone has thoughts on what could be causing the problem.

Sounds frustrating.
I have a couple Sapphire 7950's under the H20-all kinds of "setup" issues but once theyr'e set-niice.
I would re-seat the card (PC powered off, ofc)
Double check power cables-
Sometimes jostling cables will cause intermittent issues.
(especially any molex to 6 or 8 pin converters,natch-hated)
Also possible ULPS may be causing issues.
Use Trixx to disable(in settings) & restart after checking those connections.
Hope you get lucky!

I've re-seated and unplugged and plugged the cables back in on numerous occasions to no effect. I have not tried disabling ULPS before, as I thought that only affected crossfire configurations. In reading up on what it does, I can see how it may possibly help this problem. Hopefully that will correct it. So far so good for a couple hours but that doesn't mean much yet since I've gone days without this happening.

Still, I'm concerned with why after getting a black screen the GPU prevents it from rebooting. It makes me wonder whether this may be some kind of overheating/OCP issue, perhaps on the VRMs?

I would appreciate if anyone has any other advice.

Glad to hear of some success!
Well.
You replaced the cooler with one for your card, right?
They are usually better for cooling all around, and you don't have MUCH of an overclock...
Which cooler are you using?
Out of curiosity, which of the BIOS switch postions are you currently on?
Some SAPPHIRE Boost editions are ticklish on position 1 when overclocking.
again,off the PC,throw switch to position 2.
SOMETIMES when handling card for cooler change, inadvertent switch movement occurs.
Maybe not fully in position,etc.

When it goes to idle, do you mean it goes to sleep? If so, check your sleep state settings in your bios. Something called "repost video on sX resume" I think.

If it's not that, does this card have VRM temperature reporting in GPU-Z?

I am using an H60 with bracket and a fan attached to the bracket for cooling the VRMs. This is not the boost edition and the switch hasn't been touched. I'll check later if it even has a switch and make sure it's fully in position.

By idle I mean screen off but PC is working. This has happened in that situation but has also occurred when resuming from sleep. Unfortunately, there is no VRM temperature reading in GPU-Z.

HWinfo32 or 64 may show you VRM info...
I'm thinking they are ok if you have a bracket/fan though.
So you used a shim between the H60 and the 7950?

I am using a shim with the bracket.

Just tried and HWinfo shows a VRM temperature 1 and 2 but I'm not sure if they are reliable as one is constantly equal to the GPU temp, while the other is 1-2C off. These supposed VRM temps peak at around 60C in Furmark. I do want to point out that I never get a crash during gaming, benching, or stress testing.

So after a few days of thinking that disabling ULPS fixed the problem, I left my computer idle for a few hours last night and it happened again. Black screen on attempting to resume, failure to start with a reboot, successful start after power down and cold boot.

Outside of randomly swapping out various hardware, which is not exactly something I can do at this time, what can I do to troubleshoot this?
