Need a New Card for 1440p! - Page 3

Right now only Skyrim with mods and maybe GTX IV with mods breaks the 2 GB VRAM barrier

Games in a year or two might very well break the 2 GB barrier so 4 GB might not make that much sense right now but in a year or two it could very well be usefull

The GTX 770 is more or less a pimped up GTX 680 with GPU boost 2.0 and faster VRAM

If the price on a GTX 770 is not much higher then a used GTX 680 then a 770 makes more sense

Decisions, decisions..

Vram is very import. After enough modding with skyrim, I am breaking the 2GB vram limit at 1920x1200. I am looking at having to get the GTX 770 4GB model just so that skyrim doesn't crash when I get my 1440p monitor.

What would you do in my situation?

If I had the option of getting my 670 back from my friend, do you think that would be stupid? The card itself has an issue where it's power % doesn't go over 70% in game, so I was going to RMA it anyway, but my friend says he doesn't care about that and as long as it played games he'd be fine.

My options as of now are:

Get my 670 back (2GB) ($300): SLI in the future

Get the 680 (2GB) ($290): Also SLI in the future

Or 7970 (3GB) ($340ish): Hopefully Crossfire when AMD fixes the issues they are having

I'm guessing the upgrade from my 670 to 770 wouldn't be big, and like you guys said the only worthy upgrade would be something like a 780. But regarding the VRAM, I don't plan on installing 1000000 mods on Skyrim, and I don't even play IV, so I dunno maybe I'd be fine with 2GB for now?

My original plans were to not upgrade GPUs until two years down the road, so maybe I should just go with the 7970?

I guess you have to define playable.
I could care less for hitting the 60 fps mark. I got my 780 a few days ago and I can crank up settings all the way to max and get 45+ fps in almost all games. I have yet to try crysis but I doubt it will get over 30 there but for most games its top notch =)

Now when I say I could care less,I mean Ill start fraps once just to see where things are and if there above 45 for me its all good ill keep the settings cranked. From the games I have tried the 780 will do close to 60 in most games if you tone AA down, which at 1440p is not required as much.

If you are gonna upgrade GPUs in two years anyway just go 680 then SLI in the future. 2GBs won't matter two much for now. I don't expect games to start utilizing more until late 2014. Except Witcher 3. That probably will use more.

Wait for the 8970 to pop. Even if it isn't good, it will drive 7970 prices down.

Otherwise, 3gb 7970. The card is still a monster. I've been using only one of my 7970's on my 1600p monitor because my other one has been mining 24/7 and it only takes a modest drop in settings to make FC3 perfectly playable at that res.

I suppose 8970 won't be coming out until next year right? If so, I'd rather go with a 7970. I played the waiting game many times and realized I should buy it now and call it a day. But I did some more reading and many people indeed say sometimes their VRAM goes past 2GB, then others say theirs doesn't. So what if I was the mainly play BF3? Would I hit the VRAM limit?

Let me go find out. Be right back but I have to test 4-5 maps to get a good sample size.
