SSD on an 4coredual-sata2 (only have RAID or IDE modes)

My parents have an older system that I built for them with spare parts. Recently the hard drive on it started to go south and since my dad is quite impatient for things to load I decided to buy a 128gb M4. Even though the motherboard supposedly "supports" SATA II The BIOS only has two options: RAID or NON-RAID. I read that there might be a performance increase if I used RAID instead of IDE mode. However disk performance was quite disappointing since I couldn't get the RAID drivers from the ASRock website to install under Windows 7 x64. So I opted to go for IDE mode.. or the NON-RAID setting in the BIOS . AS SSD benchmarks went up slightly, still disappointing though.

RAID READ WRITE
Code:
SEQ. 173.57 MB/s 136.97 MB/s
4K 20.04 MB/s 38.72 MB/s
4K-64Thrd 23.15 MB/s 47.83 MB/s
Acc Time .090 ms 1.356 ms

Score: 61 100
Overall: 199

IDE READ WRITE
Code:
SEQ. 190.07 MB/s 143.94 MB/s
4K 22.97 MB/s 50.39 MB/s
4K-64Thrd 25.87 MB/s 64.93 MB/s
Acc Time .078 ms .373 ms

Score: 68 130
Overall: 241

Since this motherboard has a VIA chipset am I pretty much stuck with what I got? Anyone know of any other drivers I could try under RAID? Opinions?

Wow, clearly no AHCI/NCQ support in that VIA RAID driver, what did AS SSD say about the alignment of the OS installation? Modern RAID drivers have AHCI support, but that driver clearly does not.

Last driver on ASRock's site from 2007, ancient. Best one I could find is here, scroll down to V-RAID driver under IDE & Serial ATA for VIA VT8237 chipset, even one for Windows 7, Version 6.10a:

I tried changing the registry values to enable raid without reinstalling windows but I couldnt boot into windows? am I missing something since I am using a VIA chipset with this computer?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorV
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor

I changed the start values from 3 to 0. However I do not have the iaStor value listed in the registry.

If not I will reinstall windows when I have time thursday and try raid with the drivers you pointed out to me.

Forgot to mention that AS SSD said the alignment was ok @ 103424k

I found an Asus P5GZ-MX motherboard that I forgot that I had laying around. I presume this would support ahci?
