7950 Throttling on Stock SOLVED!

Hey guys,

So it seems that after all of this time, my Sapphire 7950 is throttling back at the stock power limit at stock voltages which is OK as I can just increase the power limit right? (It clocks to 850MHz)

Wrong, it makes it run at 925MHz (stock for the 2L, or at least the card I have) but then the GPU usage goes to 63% for a few seconds and then back to 99%/100% while lowering the GPU core to 850MHz once again..

Anyone have any ideas to throw out there? smile.gif

Thanks,

UPDATE:

Solved this with a different BIOS on the card, the stock one had too much of a harsh power limit and the card would throttle under stock loads to 850MHz as mentioned.
Runs great at 1100MHz on stock voltage (1.156v) and the new BIOS also runs 950MHz stock rather then 925MHz on the old one.

I'll attach the BIOS that worked for me,

7950 2L BIOS
This has an increased power limit to 286W supposed to the stock one which had a limit of 230 or something. Works a charm! smile.gif

Be sure to check your VRM temps if you use this too, mine went up 5-10c in total at stock due to the extra wattage being passed through the card.

I take no blame if this bricks your card, however hard that may be to do with a BIOS switch though..

Just to add this is the Saphire 2L with a reference 7950 board (Signified by the AMD logo above the PCI-E slot)

I've done this on my card too. This was the only way to solve throttling in my experience

Of the new BIOS that has 286w, or the stock one?

Well
New: 015.021.000.000.000000
Stock: 015.023.000.001.000000 - Not certain, pretty sure that's it. Looks like a 200W TDP....
I have the actual stock ones dumped from both of my cards though. Saved as "HISBackup" and "SAPBackup".

Yeah, it actually is. Because the firmware of the card overwrites anything you can do.
