Really? That's a new one. They did this a few years ago. All they needed then was a email and business name to be approved. I used a gmail account and the name of our family business (happens to be a cattle farm tongue.gif) and I was approved. I didn't end up buying a card then but a few friends did. Of course that was back when they were really far behind Nvidia in the workstation graphics department.

That would be pretty amazing if I could run Maya on one screen via the Firepro and have another screen hooked up and running on the Radeon (that would have to run at 8x though) but that sounds too good to be true, again, trying might be worth it.
Unfortunately everyone I know runs Macs jealoussmiley.gif Illustrators and photographers. but Macs haven't kept up enough for 3D stuff, which is why I switched last year.

I never registered my card, the link to register it didn't exist when I went to do it online, so I don't get their emails.

that or if you are into virtual machines you can have 2 VMs with ether card passthroughed to them via VT-d so you can have a full gaming capable VM and a dedicated work VM without sacrificing performance

only catch is you cant use a K series processor

It may still be a requirement not listed. They still ask how many work stations you have. It could also be the whole no purchase nessesary equal chance laws we have for contests like this.

That is actually a good idea (maybe not for JWak-1 with his 3770K). I gotta remember that the next time I go building another workstation. Also gives me an excuse to buy one this time around.

Nice idea, but I do have a K processor unfortunately, want to OC in the future when this cpu needs a speed boost.

Yeah, I've sent them a request anyway, so they will probably just reject me. I'm not unhappy with the V7900's Maya/Mudbox performance, its still a great card, I find it hard to justify it sometimes, as the 3D I do is not always that intensive, mostly smaller commercial pieces. But it really helps with the occasional poly-heavy scene.

As such, if I get a Radeon/GeForce card and it works fine, and is still usable for the heavier scenes I may switch over, the resale value of the workstation cards isn't so great and that worries me. The V7900 may be worth £300-350 now, but nothing in another year or so.

well IMO you could trade/sell your K processor.

as for overclock non K will still give you +400mhz ontop of turbo so thats around 4.3ghz but even without overclock these are very capable CPUs and IMO you wont even need to overclock them to keep up for a long time and even then you are more likely to be better off updating to the latest and greatest

if you do intend to use vt-d with xen then you must get an ATI card as nvidia doesnt support virtualization with non enterprise equipment

I could trade it/sell it, but on a budget, I don't think I could justify that. I'm too unfamiliar with Windows to start doing anything too peculiar.

The general plan is to push to 4.4ghz (should be fine on a H60 in UK climate) and sell the V7900 before it starts to depreciate in value too much.

Probably go with XFire'd 7870 XT's or the newest equivalent in about 6-9months. I'm happy that a few people had some good ideas on how I could run the work/game gpu's together smile.gif

Cheers everyone. If I ever do get round to doing this, I'll post something in this thread.
