Migration of a Perc 5/i Raid 5 to be seen under ESXi and attached to the Server 2008 File Server. Cant seem to figure out how to preform this action.

Hello,

I know this may not be the ideal area to post this but i couldn't think of exactly where to put it and i know the community here is fantastic so i thought id give it a shot and if not then maybe at least i'd get a direction or advice on where to post it for better solutions.

Anyway I'm currently running a Windows Server 2008 R2 file server with 4x2TB hard drives in a Raid 5 configuration. I'm looking to change that to a raid 10 once i find the available disk space to dump my data to to preform the task, but i digress. I also have a ESXi VM host that i have another Prec5/i in that is currently just hosting VM's. I'm thinking of virturalizing my file server since is doesn't get a lot of action and i don't think the added Perc 5/i would be an issue to add to the current MB.

So my question is this; IF i have a VM host how would i go about adding a Perc 5/i with 4x2TB Raid 5 NTFS to the VMware ESXi host and then create the Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition as my MB doesn't support hosting x64 VM's and i honestly don't need it, Yet have the VM be able to have the entire 4x2TB attached to it?

OR?

Should i back up the data, add the Perc 5/i to the VMware Host and then create the Raid 10 that i want and then add it as an additional data store.

My only concern with the option above is if one of the drives i backed up to fails and i loose the data.

I'm also creating an FreeNAS VM should i host it there instead?

I'm migrating away from the physical server for 2 reasons the OS has become corrupt and unstable, and to reduce power consumption of hosting two physical computers.

If you have the space inside the VM host, you could create an fresh 2008 R2 VM and use ESXi to pass through the second PERC 5/i to the Windows VM as a data array. This would allow you to consolidate boxes immediately. If the Windows PERC array is already partitioned into OS and data, you could remove the OS (as you'll now be using the fresh ESXi VM for a Windows file server).

I cant seem to find where to make the association between the Data Perc and the Perc that is hosting the VM's OS's.

If you want to cut down to only a single physical server then I would add the PERC into the ESX host with the drives and make a new datastore. Then create the 2008 or Freenas VM.

Since you only want 1 machine, that seems like the most sensible option. Otherwise I would have said keep your second box and install openfiler on it and present the storage as iSCSI to the ESX box.

So if i just add the Perc it will just see it and i should be able to add it as a datastore, and then be able to attach that data store to my Windows Server 2008 File Server?

I'm just wondering if there is a YouTube video showing this? or a good walk through displaying this process.

I'm only concerned as i currently don't have available disk space to backup my data at this time.

I am planning on getting free disk space and then reset the disk ot raid 10 if i keep the Windows File server, but i do think i am going to go with FreeNAS and set p an ISCSI.

If ESXi supports it and includes drivers for the PERC 5i then yes. It should recognise it.

And it is supported.

I'll give it a shot this weekend.

I know the Perc 5/i will work i'm currently running with on in the the ESXi server already, i'll be adding a second expanding the storage option of the server to 22 drives :-)
