SSD upgrade for old Dell Studio 15 laptop?

Hey fellow SSD gurus, was hoping to gain some incite into possible upgrade I have for my moms 2009 Dell Studio 15 laptop she has. From day one, this laptop has always been really slow upon bootup and loading any programs on Windows 7 64bit with 3gigs of RAM and Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400.

My moms needs are real basic and we couldn't afford the nicer CPU when we were building this laptop but now I think the biggest issue is the slow 5400 RPM drive thats causing the laptop to just lug, no matter what i've done to help speed things up, including disabling all fancy GUI graphics, MSCONFIG, defragging, disabling indexing on HDD and its still just is a slug.

I was thinking that slapping in a mid range SSD would help give this thing a much needed boost in performance all around and I need to know what mid range, cost effective SSD would work well in a 4 year old laptop thats likely on SATA II interface? A 120gig drive is more then enough space, I don't need a huge one. Thanks for any help

Honestly, you'd be best off going with something like this Mushkin Enhanced SSD:

Its $99, its 2nd gen, so it will be perfect for the SATA II interface on the laptop

I have not heard much on Muskins reliabilty and that is the most important aspect of whatever SSD I need to put in, along with a 5 year warranty.

I was thinking of going with Samsungs 840 as I really like my 840 pro and the samsungs have a good track record

The sata 2 mushkin will do fine for your mother's needs. You can do sata 3 if the ssd is cheap enough. Its possible to reuse the ssd if it outlives the laptop.

Mushkin makes quality products having owned both ram and ssd. My sata 2 and ddr3 ram still runs today. Speeds are right under OCZ but are more reliable.

It will speed it up a little along with a fresh install. I have a 17" studio that I just put a vertex 2 in a few months ago. I would also recomend more ram.
