7600GT oc'ing questions

Ok, first let me say, I have a bit of experiance overclocking other system components, but none with graphics cards....

And that I'm new here, so I am a bit lost on these forums, sorry if I do something wrong....

So, I have a 3DFuzion (spinoff of BFG) GeForce 7600GT. The core clock is 560MHz by default, the memory 700MHz. I recently got some softclocking utilities because I have an intel mobo, but I had no luck finding something I could use with it. I did however, find out that systool has a graphics card overclocking feature, became intrested, and started playing around a bit. I got it to 800Mhz memory and a 580MHz core, and started halo, and it looked ok, and then went wild... little white pixels everywhere.... also, the flashlight, which usualt is smooth looking, it flickerd every few frames so it had a fast blinking appearance. so I backed them down to stock, and tried it again today. I set the core to 620 this time, and the memory to 760MHz. This time, no white pixels, but still he flickering flashlight.

My questions are:

What are the white things?

is there a certain ratio I should be trying to follow for memory and core speeds??

without a volt mod, can I have hurt, or in the future, could I hurt my card, if I push it to far?

I have heard about artifacting, what is it? anything to do with the white pixels I was seeing?

Is there a better tool I should be using, or anything of that nature?

is there a certain ratio I should be trying to follow for memory and core speeds?? No, not really

without a volt mod, can I have hurt, or in the future, could I hurt my card, if I push it to far? No, as long as you dont go mental or if it starts to overheat

I have heard about artifacting, what is it? anything to do with the white pixels I was seeing? When textures go screwy or when you get wierd pixels - could be the white pixels, although it could be a dead pixel on your monitor

Is there a better tool I should be using, or anything of that nature? I would use the latest version of ATiTool for overclocking, as i really like it

here is my xfx7600 gt .
i used coolbits to overclock ,
ati tool to check for artifacts ,
i am useing the nvidia 91.47 drivers . some of the newer drivers are BUGGY .
no problems here .
maybe coolbits might be a better program for overclocking ?
how are your temps? are you useing stock cooling?
i would say that what you are seeing are artifacts .
here is my overclock . you should get about the same .
hope that helps .
cheers .

Thanks for the replys.

The white things are not dead pixels, and appear in complex textures, so it must be artifacting

My temps are fine, altho I'm using the stock cooler, I haven't had temps over 50C

exactly what's diffrent about coolbits?(just wondering)

How are you overclocking in the nvidia driver? I don't have that menu...

And lastly, I have ATI tool, and it has the rotating cube with the wiry surface, and when I click check for artifacts, it appears to freeze, or stay on one side, but says no errors.... is it working right?

coolbits is a registory hack .
you load the program , then enter the hack into the registory . the ocong option appears in the nvidia controll panel after you use the registory hack .

as for ati tool , its not FROZEN . its warming up your card , to see if there is any artifacts . look at the TIMER there in the bottom . NO ERRORS for x number of minutes / seconds .
run the ati toll for a few minutes , then up either the core or memory another 5 mhz . WHEN the ati tool freezes , or shows something like lines etc . thats your limit .
then back off 10 mhz .
do the core first ,,
then do the memory .
im not an expert on this , so anyone can feel free to correct any of this , if its not so .
hope that helps .
cheers .

Well i mean, the cube isn't spinning, it's just showing one side, which is not changing... I have yet to have an error reported by it, I let it run for 10 minutes last night with no error, but it was artifacting in games on the same clocks.

So back it down untill you dont see any more artifacts in your games, and leave it there.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm getting the core to 660MHz, I'm testing it now... it seems stable. Hopefully will get it to 680MHz. The memory is what I'm having trouble with... artifacting at 800MHz, I can't seem to get it stable for sure over 775MHz.

And this is with no voltmod and stock cooling.... I may be getting water cooling in my box, so then I'll put a waterblock on the card and see how far i can really take it.

(edit)The card seams to be able to handle this, but not the utils im using. ATItool crashes, the nvidia driver crashes, the whole computer resets... but the temps are not to high at 670, and there sno artifacting at 660... what's wrong?

(edit again)Well I got it to a 710MHz core and 785MHz memory, and then it starts artifacting, my memory just won't go any higher than that, I got it to 800 at one point, but I just couldn't get it stable. It seems there are pairs of frequencies with the core that help the memory, like some speeds, if the core is the right speed, it works, if the core's not, its 20MHz to fast. I think it would take some hardware mods to go any higher on this, because it hasen't broken 50C. Also at these speeds, the whole system seems to get a bit unstable, which I blame on a bad driver, but open something, and it can go down in flames.

ANYWAY, much thanks for all the help.

And one last paranoid thing of mine, I swear it's the last, But Are you sure I can't have hurt anything? I had it on some settings it was artifacting like mad on for quite some time......
