Help! Athlon 7450

Thread Starter
I bought an off the shelf unit a few years for the missus to use as an HTPC. It cam in a fairly small case with a very limited motherboard.
Having a look at upgrading it today, I ran CPUZ and discovered that it is using 1.6v while idle, even though its clocked down to 1200MHz. Under load, it shoots up to 2400MHz and 1.648v.
I have a spare Athlon II X2 235e which is considerably more efficient, however if the motherboard is forcing 1.6v to the CPU, it may very well destroy the 235e.

Does anyone know of software which could be used to control the voltages and suchlike while in Windows?

The model in question: Packard Bell imedia S3210. (Click to show)

to be completely honest, I'd just put the CPU in there, i'm pretty sure the CPU will survive 1.6v and I'm also pretty sure the motherboard wouldn't "force" 1.6v to the CPU, I'd say its worth giving it a shot mate smile.gif

I put the 235 in, and its still showing 1.6v. However the temperatures are now much more suitable.
The idle temperature of the 7450 was 60*c; the 235 idle temp is 35*c.
The 235 is 45nm 45w, where as the 7450 is 65nm 95w.

1.6v shown in both the BIOS and in Windows does strike me as dangerously high though.

is there any settings in the motherboard bios to edit the voltages going to the CPU?

What program are you using to check voltages in windows?

35c is good, I believe if it was being over volted it'd be a bit higher than 35c idle

what are temps like on load?

The 7450 was shutting itself down after a few hours. The BIOS has no options to adjust the voltage or overclock/underclock.
Its emergency shutoff is set at 90*C (and that is the lowest option). The 235 is pushing 57*C under load.
In Windows, CPUZ and HWmonitor are both showing the same voltage, along with the BIOS. The sensor could be over reading, but considering the temperatures on the 7450 I believe it to be correct.
