Improving WiFi range on my E2500

I have an E2500 and the range is terrible. Someone advised me that if I install DD-WRT firmware on it, I will somehow have better range? Can someone tell me if this is true?

open source firmware allows you to raise the wifi broadcast signal power, which might help.

I had issues with an E3000 and tried everything under the sun, including various power levels. Nothing worked and I chalked it up to the crappy internal antennas. I added another wireless point to fix the weak zone.

I'd say go ahead and try DD-WRT since your router is compatible. If you don't see any meaningful improvement after tweaking the settings, then you might have to consider repositioning the router or getting an AP to extend the network where to where you need it. You might also want to take an "RF inventory" of your environment if you're running on the 2.4GHz band. Eliminate any unnecessary "noise makers" (BT, microwaves, etc.) that could be causing interference.

I read the Newegg user reviews for the E2500 and 25% of them rate it poorly (like "1 out of 5 eggs" poorly). This router might not have been the best choice. (Although, Amazon reviews paint's a rosier picture.) An Asus RT-N66U might resolve your problems.

Ok so I tried DD-WRT.....did not make much of a difference...any cheaper options than an ASUS RT-N66U?
I'll say from experience, don't pay for the 5 Ghz band because it doesn't penetrate walls as well as 2.4 Ghz.

Some other options
D-Link DIR-655
Netgear N300
TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND

If you still have any issues, you can try grabbing some 9 dbi or higher antennas on ebay

Whatever new router you get, you can turn your existing e2500 into an repeater with dd-wrt to extend your wifi range.

I would get the TL-WR1043ND
