Current pending sector... fixed by intensive full wipe?

Long story short, couldn't copy from HD to microSD, thought the SD card got wrecked. Turns out, SMART was showing a warning status for the drive I was trying to copy from, with this error popping up:

0x800745D
an unexpected error is keeping you from... input/output device error

image.jpg

A full error scan showed some damaged blocks (3, with 10 clusters damaged I believe, don't have a screenshot of this).

So, I rang the RMA section and they said the device is under warranty. So, before sending it in, I used a full wipe (to delete most traces of data, just in case). Apparently, this fixed the issue? Now I don't have any smart errors, and the damaged sectors are gone.

I used active@ killdisk, and this is the 'certificate' that was given out:
Code:
Erase WDC WD5000AAKX-001CA0 ATA Device Fixed Disk (82h) (Serial Number: WD-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx) - 466 GB
Started: 2013-06-17 19:17:37
Storage size: 466 GB (500107862016 bytes)
Erase method: US DoD 5220.22-M (3 passes, verify) [Verification 10%]
Pass 1 - OK (0x0000000000000000)
Pass 2 - OK (0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF)
Pass 3 - OK (Random)
Verification passed OK
Erase Finished: 2013-06-18 00:00:14
Total Erase Time: 04:42:37

I'm not sure if I should still send it in, or ring the customer support explaining the issue. I don't wanna use the drive now since I'm afraid it'll fail sooner rather than after, so I can't really place any important (or simply big chunks of) data on it.

...can I still get the drive replaced, or should I confirm by phone first?

i would RMA, those C5 errors possibly have just possibly have just been reallocated IIRC. Run another scan if you like and see but i am sure it is still slowly going to die.

Those are exactly my thoughts, but what if they refuse to replace the drive? Would my image suffice as evidence? Because the drive did really have these issues, otherwise I wouldn't go through the trouble of sending it in.

i had the same errors on a HDD late last year but like 792 C5 errors and WDC RMA'd the drive. i must say when i wiped mine i didnt scan it again and just sent it in.

i would maybe contact them first and tell them what happen if you are not sure they will replace it but i am sure they will.

Nah WD will replace it no problems. I have had the same issue three or four times. I normally use the WD diagnostic tools and save the results of it if they have any problems. That will have the serial number and all the info they need. In fact run the extended test on that program. If there is an actual error it will reappear during that test. That particular error is normally correct but other SMART errors can just be flukes with nothing actually wrong.
