7970 Issue!

Thread Starter
I have a problem that I would like to fix asap. Or at least get an understanding of whats going on... So I left my computer on, and I came back to orange and grey lines on my monitor. Went to restart and it wouldn't boot. I have CPU graphics so after some fiddling, I got it to boot with the card unplugged. Whenever I plug in the card it will not boot, it just black screens. I recently fried a PSU (Liquid Cooling issue frown.gif...) And am now running my friends rosewill 630w. It was running perfect for a LAN party some friends and I had, then BOOM this happens. Would it possibly be the PSU? Or possibly the card?

Specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte Z77A-G45
CPU: i5 2500k (Had it at 4.8ghz but backed it off to 3.8ghz to try and reduce power)
GPU: HD 7970

This is fully liquid cooled so I have had no issues with temps (That I'm aware of)
Everything was highly overclocked, is there a way to bring the card back to default clocks?

I thank you guys for any help in advance. I just really need to figure out this issue :/

Could very well be a dead gpu. I would first test it in another PC before rma'ing or replacing it.

Then if it does work then you have to start eliminating other components, start with the psu.

I have had a similiar experience but my issue wasnt as severe as yours. I run with two screens, one being my main and second as auxilary. Whenever, I overclock the memory on my Matrix 7970, my main screen becomes a complete white and i am unable to do anything, even on the 2nd screen. However, I am able to boot with mine perfectly fine. The artifacts only happen once I put a load on the card after OC'ing the memory. Dunno if this helps you but I'm just providing my personal experience with something similiar.

PSU should be okay since you're running a single GPU. But lets rule out that the card has the issue as of now.

Anyway, how long has the overclock been applied before this incident happened since you mentioned that it is heavily overclocked?

I have had the clocks for just about as long as the computer tongue.gif and I run 2 screens as well. I'll try and be more precise with this.

Setup:
z77a- g45 mobo
i5 2500k (water block)
Single 7970 (water block)
8gb Ripjaw RAM
1 128gb SSD, 2 500Gb, HDD 1 3Tb HDD
2 Samsung 23" monitors
Peripherals (Keyboard, Mouse, Astro A50)
Currently only 3 Case fans, Computer is basically bare frame because of my previous water leak.

Symptoms:
Left computer on over night to DL a game, came back to orange screen.
Try to reboot, all lights and fans/pump come on just fine, but just black screen. No boot.
Unplugged screen to card, Nothing.
Unplugged card, Boots perfect.
Plug card back in, no boot again.

Currently running on Intel graphics to try and figure out the problem

I tried a different card slot, no luck.

Hmm...I can only suggest that you try the card in another system to see if the system will boot and show on the screen. Have you also tried connecting into a different port on the card? Just to rule out the possibility of a spoilt connector
