Formatting SSD....guide please

Thread Starter
Hi again and always,

Well, i bought another SSD to use either in my 1st rig or 2nd rig, but i thought i would like to use it in my 2nd rig, but my 2nd rig has already SSD inside, so i was thinking to take that out and use the new one, but then i want to format that current used one and keep it as secondary and scratch/cache SSD, so how can i format it?

Also should i connect that second SSD to SATAIII as well? Will this lower the speed of main first SSD if both SSDs connected to SATAIII each of the chipset board one?

Just format it in Windows using the Quick Format option.

Connect the drive to whatever kind of SATA port it's designed for. Having both drives connected to both SATA III ports won't affect the performance.

Ah cool, so it is that simple.

So do i quick format that SSD in Windows installation after choosing the drive to format and then select the other i want for OS?

Later on i want someone to tell me how to set the second one for Cache[memory i think or read/write maybe?], i know how to set for scratch of Photos/videos apps.

Easiest way to format a secondary drive that is already installed in your PC is to "Right click" on the drive letter in My Computer and choose format. If you have open SATAIII ports on your motherboard you will be ok, the drives will run independently (assuming no RAID configuration).

Also, check out this thread, a lot of good info regarding SSD's

What do you mean open SATAIII ports? How can i know it is open ports and not RAID? in BIOS i didn't config anything for RAID, so does that mean the ports are open independent?

I only meant of free (not used) SATAIII ports on your motherboard. Sorry if it was not clear. Don't worry about the RAID comment, if you haven't changed anything in the BIOS you will be ok. I only commented on RAID since part of your question was if the drives would perform independently. Power, SATAIII connection -> quick format and you are good to go! thumb.gif

Oh, you want to handle it during the setup of the Windows installation? You can format it as a secondary while in Windows too.

If you want to format it during the setup of the installation of Windows, then click "Drive options (advanced)" when you get here. Then you'll see this, but before doing anything, make sure the drive you want to be formatted is selected. After making sure it's selected, click "Delete", then "New", and then "Format".

Then you'll shut down from within the installer, disconnect all other drives except for one you're installing Windows onto. If you don't, then the boot sector will be put on a drive you don't want it on.

Ok, what if i just removed that current SSD and install the new SSD and do Windows 7 installation and when finished i insert the another used one and format in windows? i was thinking that i don't want to remove SSD and re-insert again, but if i may mess up things then i better remove it and only keep one SSD until done then connect the other later and format it.
