Minecraft working fine with 780GTX cards?

A friend of mine uses a 680GTX and his GPU usage in minecraft is in the low 40%'s where one of my 570GTX is somewhere in the high 90%'s on identical settings & mods. His FPS are roughly 40% lower than mine and his CPU is also mostly idling.
Since this is odd I'm wondering if upgrading to a 780GTX will get me some similar issues.
My 570's seem to be on their last legs as I need to increase the fan speed to make them run stable at even base clocks. Also I want to put the new card under water to finally progress on my build but I don't want to end up with less performance in minecraft than I currently have. Other games will be fine I reckon but minecraft seems odd, yet pretty important. redface.gif

so, to make some sense, does anyone run minecraft (and possibly sonic ether's shaders) on a 780GTX and can tell me if the GPU usage is fine or are there issues?

Is he using Vsync and getting at least 60fps? Minecraft is definitely more cpu bound with rendering chunks and stuff...

No, VSync was turned off and this FPS slider in minecraft was set to 120 fps and later to maximum without any changes. We compared the ingame settings line by line and the config was identical. He even uses my patched minecraft.jar so we have exactly the same game. His old minecraft.jar also had similar bad performance, it was just not that obvious because that one didn't include sonic ether's shaders. rolleyes.gif

He was using 310.x drivers and got texture issues in Sonic Ethers shaders so he upgraded to 320.18 that evening and nothing changed, except the textures work properly now.
I'm running 320.14 atm. I had Java x64 1.7.11 before and updated to 1.7.21 with no performance changes whatsoever. He is running some x64 version in between those two so I kind of doubt that's the problem.

The weird part is, nothing seems to be throttling but something has to be. The CPU is kind of idle at roughly 25% on my rig and a wee higher on his i5 but nowhere even near full load.
That's what worries me about the whole new GPU part. If I could help him that'd be great of course but we tried a lot that evening to no avail.
