Help Choosing 990FX Motherboard

Thread Starter
Howdy guys,
Since the start of this build i've had a M5A99X EVO Rev1 990X chipset mobo, and i'm thinking of upgrading it to something a bit better for overclocking and gaming. The board right now under OC'ing, the socket and VRM's get quite hot even while idle so does the NB if something with better cooling exists that'd be nice. As far as budget goes, im UK based and the amount would be good to be as less as i can but i can strech up to the top end if need be (Crosshair V range).

The ones i was looking for are as follows, anyone got any opinions on them?;

ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 GEN3
AsRock Extreme9

I've heard that the Crosshair is overpriced, however i am looking for a nice looking one. As for the Sabertooth everyone tells me PCIe 3.0 isn't worth the extra and the Extreme9 is failure prone. On the other hand would AMD be likely to release a new chipset in future for SR?

How fast is your fx running and what voltahe and temperature?

My Zalman CNPS10X performa is a bit better Than the 212, yet my overclock is limited my my temperature, not my mobo. Besides, your mobo has 2 extra phases And a much bigger heatsink, you'll be fine without the upgrade.

But since you wanted an upgrade, I would go for the saber personally. The pcie 3.0 saber will only give you a few percent in fps increase which is not Worth it, and the crosshair is just over priced, but sure looks nice. The asrock looks like crap, and the 12+2 phase vrm is actually 2 6+1s added Together, which means it would overclock similar to your current board if not limited my temperature.

I'm running 4.3Ghz on 1.375v which maxes at about 50 under load. So there really wouldn't be much point in a new board you think?

Well, can you clock it any higher?

If your cpu throttle at under 60C then it might be The voltage regulatprs overheating. If that is the case, aim a fast fan straight at those heatsinks and see if your cpu still throttles. If problem fixed, tjem your heatsink on the vrms are not up to The job, the you can either run it with a fan on top, or get a new mobo (not worth it imo).

sabertooth as I own one?

mine is the r1.0 version though?

can get 4.74ghz on a 8120 but draws too much power though so I leave @ 4.5

id get ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 GEN3 if you can find one?

I'm sure i can, i've been running Prime95 to check to stability and its all fine right now so i think i might be able to get 4.5Ghz before it throttles. How can i tell if its throttling? The Hyper 212 is sitting above and in front of the HS so when the air rises it quickly gets brushed out the rear of the case, but the sinks still feel toasty. I think it would be made worse by the fact that i want to go closed loop in the future and that would pretty much rule out airflow over the sinks.

Do you have hardware monitor or windows 8?

If your voltage suddenly drops below 1V or if your Cpu usage in task manager in win 8 suddenly dips then your cpu throttled.

If your cpu core remperature is below 60C when you throttled, then it is most likely your vrms overheating. Point a fan straight at those heatsinks should help A lot.

@Korruptedkaos, what voltage are you running at?

I use HWMonitor and Speedfan so its easier to see CPU usage so no throttling yet. Do you think it would be worth upgrading another part of my system instead?
