Questions on i5-2500K OC

Thread Starter
Okay I have over locked this processor before on my previous mono and was stable at 4.5. I recently purchased the asus p8z77-v mono and the bios are completely different from gigabytes old bios. I tried using the OS software asus recommends and it clocked my processor to 5.2 ghz and my temps were about 86 and voltage was about 1550. This actually killed the board on reboot and had to use the button on the oath to reset the CMOS and bios to default. I've been running stock now for a while and with the gaming and applications I use and do stock isn't cutting it for me.

So what I really want to confirm is that when manually overclocking this processor should I just increase multiplier in small increments while analyzing heat and voltages until I get to breaking point then backing down? Then after this should I mess with voltages to obtain my oc that I want if not possible by just changing multiplier? I'm trying for anywhere between 4.5-4.8 ghz.also should I clock my memory from 1600 to 1866? I'll put my full build below.

Build:

Motherboard - asus p8z77-v
Cooler - Corsair h80 water cooling and 2 more 120mm case fans
Processor - i5-2500k
Memory - corsair 1866 vengeance 8gb
Psu - corsair 650w
Graphics - radeon 7950 vapor-x and radeon 6850
OS - windows 8 pro 64 bit

Any thing else let me know and I'll try to provide for you. All my drivers and bios are fully updated and I just put a fresh install of windows 8 on today.

Take a look at this thread. http://www.overclock.net/t/1100100/info-intel-2500k-2600k-overclocking-tips/0_50

Also, I have to say you are absolutely nuts for using auto OC to get 5.2GHz! ohno-smiley02.gif It's obviously why that mobo died. Definitely still with manual overclocking and I wouldn't push the chip to the max for 24/7 clocks. I do for benching, but otherwise my chip stays at 4.5GHz.

Give that thread a read, you should be able to get 4.5Ghz out of your 2500k with <1.4V, and if your ram is rated for 1866 it should run at 1866, but you will need to use the XMP profiles IIRC

Thanks for replying i'll check out the thread. Also I didnt intentionally do it. You start the program and it goes until it stops i didnt want it to go that high. Not using that program ever again lol

Yep, don't use the OS overclocking. Someone needs to tell Asus that they don't need overclocking from OS, but good monitoring tool with functionality according to temps (like fan control, alarm, auto shutdown)
